Summer Encounters Counselor Experience Coordinator

Position Description

The Counselor Experience Coordinator plays a key role in helping Summer Encounters come to life each day by supporting, encouraging, and developing our high school counselors. This position helps create the positive, energetic culture that makes Summer Encounters a place where campers feel welcomed, staff feel supported, and everyone is excited to come back each day.

The ideal candidate is relational, organized, flexible, and encouraging — someone who enjoys working with people, solving problems, and helping young staff grow in confidence and responsibility throughout the summer.

General Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Fostering a Positive Camp Culture

  • Help create a welcoming, inclusive, and upbeat camp environment where counselors and campers feel valued and supported.
  • Model positivity, teamwork, and professionalism while encouraging strong communication among counselors.
  • Actively engage with counselors and campers throughout the day, helping maintain a fun, safe, and encouraging atmosphere.
  • Assist in addressing challenges or conflicts in a constructive and relationship-focused way.

Counselor Scheduling and Management

  • Partner with the Operations Coordinator to build and maintain counselor schedules, ensuring appropriate coverage across all camps and activities.
  • Support counselors in understanding expectations and succeeding in their roles through clear communication and consistent follow-up.
  • Monitor daily staffing needs and help problem-solve scheduling adjustments as needed.
  • Guide counselors in developing strong organizational habits and professional responsibility.

Staff Support and Leadership Development

  • Serve as a mentor and resource for counselors, many of whom are experiencing their first job.
  • Provide regular check-ins to offer encouragement, feedback, and support.
  • Celebrate successes and help counselors grow in confidence, leadership, and teamwork skills.
  • Assist with staff training, team-building opportunities, and morale-building initiatives throughout the summer.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in Camp or Youth Leadership: Previous experience as a camp counselor, team leader, teacher, coach, or in another youth-focused role is preferred. Candidates should be comfortable mentoring and supporting high school staff in a camp setting.
  • Strong Leadership and Relational Skills: Ability to encourage, guide, and motivate staff while building positive relationships and maintaining a supportive team environment.
  • Excellent Communication Skills: Able to communicate clearly with counselors, leadership, and families while addressing challenges in a calm and constructive manner.
  • Organization and Flexibility: Comfortable managing schedules, problem-solving in real time, and adapting to the changing needs of a dynamic camp environment.
Positive and Energetic Attitude: Brings enthusiasm, professionalism, and a genuine appreciation for camp culture and working with students.

    Summary

This position takes place on the campus of Christ Church Episcopal School and includes both indoor and outdoor environments. The Counselor Experience Coordinator will spend much of the day actively engaging with counselors and campers during activities, transitions, meals, and breaks.

This is a seasonal hourly position with pay based on experience. The Summer Encounters season runs May 26 – July 31st (camp closed June 27th - July 5th) with additional pre-season training required. The position averages 35–40 hours per week, typically Monday–Friday from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm.
