Description

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Advocate for students and work with other individuals and organizations to promote the academic, career, social, and emotional development for all students. Provide support services to students, parents, and staff. Provide all students with counseling and classroom instruction lessons related to academic and job skills for the future; help students to understand their abilities, aptitudes and interests in light of the opportunities and demands they experience presently or may experience in the future.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Develops and maintains the Career Exploration and Development Center with educational and career planning resources for students with flexible hours;
  • Counsels individually with students and parents to develop and annually update the students' Academic and Career Planning Portfolio;
  • Collaborates with school counselors to ensure student Academic Career Plan and offerings in the Program of Studies are complementary;
  • Delivers the Career Counseling curriculum 6-8 or 9-12 in collaboration with school counselors;
  • Provides support and coordination of specific work-based learning experiences for students at the assigned school;
  • Collaborates with the Career and Technical Education teachers and their direct supervisor in documentation of work-based learning experiences;
  • Identifies mentoring, shadowing, internships and other work-based learning opportunities for students by working with existing public and private agencies and businesses;
  • Maintains current database of information services for exploring long- and short-term internship and mentoring opportunities;
  • Develops activities to ensure all students engage in hands on career exploration and in-depth awareness experiences in appropriate career areas;
  • Continually develops and evaluates a quality career counseling program to provide all students with relevant academic and job skills for the future;
  • Assists in development and continuity of division career education programs K-12;
  • Enhances and coordinates scholarship offerings;
  • Confers with parents, in groups or individual sessions, concerning the total school program as it relates to the educational, technical and personal development of their student;
  • Promotes effective public relations through participation in community activities;
  • Undertakes, in a cooperative endeavor, the continuous evaluation of; the nature and scope of the school counseling services; the functioning of school counseling as an integral part of the total educational program; the effectiveness of school counseling services;
  • Assists the school counseling teams and administrators, along with the Director of CTE, in the College and Career Readiness Index participant rate;
  • Perform related work as required.

Qualifications: KSA's, Education

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge in human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders. Possess a strong desire to help others and possess the ability to inspire respect, trust, and confidence. Demonstrate command of Standard English, both spoken and written. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, memos and reports. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, parents, students and the general public. Ability to coordinate with the business community. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required:
Master's Degree. Pupil Personnel License or Postgraduate Professional License - Pre K through 12th grade. A minimum of three years of recent successful teaching or counselor experience, at least two years at the secondary school level.
Special Requirements: Pupil Personnel License or Post Graduate Professional License (School Counselor Pre K-12)

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Frequent contact is made with individuals from other internal departments for purposes of exchanging factual information which requires judgment or interpretation. May require long periods of work in a sitting or standing position; duties require the ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, twist, reach and lift up to 30 lbs. unassisted. Work is typically performed in an office and classroom setting.
