General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities

Performs counseling, crisis intervention and provides social service information and referrals to public and private community agencies. Knowledge of group counseling and program development helpful.

Each Municipal Employee Legal Services (MELS) Social Worker is part of a team of lawyers, legal assistants and social workers, who provide civil legal services to employees, retirees and their families eligible for the MELS benefit. MELS Social Workers are under the supervision of the MELS Social Work Manager and consult with attorneys.

Examples of Typical Tasks:

1. Provide crisis intervention and short-term counseling services.

2. Perform clinical assessments and provide referrals and resources as needed.

3. Conduct evaluations, clinical support and collaboration.

4. Consult with attorneys and legal assistants to ensure coordinated case handling.

5. Provide psychoeducation and case management services.

6. Facilitate group counseling services including Financial Empowerment workshop.

7. Appear in court and at agency conferences as needed: may include home visits.

8. Assist clients as needed with applications for benefits and advocacy letters.

9. Participate in team meetings, trainings and program planning.

10. May provide supervision to graduate social work interns.

11. Maintain accurate documentation and provide reports and forms as needed.

Experience and Qualifications:

MSW degree along with LMSW license, preferably including work in an interdisciplinary setting. Experience in the following areas helpful; crisis intervention, short-term counseling, knowledge of community services, and group work. Bi-lingual Spanish language speaking ability preferred.
