University Counselor I (100% Grant Funded Position)Wayne State University is searching for an experienced University Counselor I (100% Grant Funded Position) at its Detroit campus location.Wayne State is a premier, public, urban research university located in the heart of Detroit, Michigan where students from all backgrounds are offered a rich, high-quality education.   • Provide academic advising services to the Office of Federal TRIO Veterans Upward Bound Program (VUB), including screening, diagnostic assessment, intake processing for eligible participants.
  • Assist with providing supervision to staff/interns, including monitoring electronic record-keeping, student activity notes, and oversee student diagnostic treatment planning, advising skills and techniques, policies and procedures.
  • Assist with providing crisis intervention and critical incident debriefing to VUB participants.
  • Maintain confidential client files and appropriate record-keeping, according to professional, ethical, and legal standards.
  • Provide liaison and outreach to the Community, the University programs/schools, housing, student organizations, other post-secondary education programs and other groups.
  • Serve as a resource/consultant to administration, faculty, and staff, aimed at bringing veterans' perspective and concerns to the University.
  • Attend staff and professional development meetings, contributing ideas for on-going improvements and strategic planning for Veterans Upward Bound.
  • Provide Classroom and Online instruction in one or more areas of a VUB core curriculum (Study Skills, Grammar/Writing/Literature, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Language or Computer Skills)
  • Engage in continuing education to improve clinical skills.
  • Assist with preparing appropriate printed or web-based materials to promote Veterans Upward Bound services.
  • Network with community-based services as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Education or related field.
  • Demonstrated high degree of sensitivity, interest, understanding, ability, knowledge, and experience working with adult students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This value is strongly endorsed and embraced by Veterans Upward Bound.
  • Sensitivity, creativity, and an understanding of developmental issues of both traditional and nontraditional college bound students.
  • Strong analytical and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to give group presentations.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Reliable and innovative with customer service orientation.
  • Commitment to working with an enthusiastic and dedicated multidisciplinary team.
