POSITION TITLE: Substance Abuse Counselor

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time

SUPERVISOR: Agency Clinical Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Agency Clinical Director, the substance abuse counselor will work closely with clients to develop plans that will help them maintain their sobriety and implement learned coping mechanisms to assist in relapse prevention. The substance abuse counselor will have knowledge of and the ability to comply with all applicable laws and regulations as well as knowledge of the program requirements. He/she will also provide wrap-around support to assigned clients, which includes knowledge of the twelve-step programing, ensuring regular client communication, proper documentation, and record-keeping, as well as participating in regular meetings with the Clinical Director, Program Managers, Case Managers, and Mental Health Therapist regarding caseloads. The substance abuse counselor will also work with the DBH Liaison

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Build and maintain relationships with community-based substance abuse resource providers, to coordinate with other agencies and provide LightHouse clients with appropriate and applicable referrals/links to needed or helpful services.

2. Assist and plan for moments the clients may relapse by introducing coping mechanisms, sponsors, and safe spaces.

3. Establish and maintain effective contacts with local area resources including community members, families, law enforcement, residential facilities, and other organizations.

4. Document progress with clients, in the charting format utilized by the agency to be completed and filed in a timely manner. Ensure that mandates to report harm to self or others mandated reporting requirements.

5. Motivate clients by using treatment plans that involve methods such as Motivational Interviewing, 12-step facilitation, etc.

6. Communicate concerns with the Clinical Director, regarding ethical and or boundary dilemmas/issues, as well as requests for extra support in matters that involve crises, the need for mental health referrals, etc.

7. Commute to and conduct interactions at the client’s home, an accessible location, or at one of the LightHouse SSC office locations.

8. Transport clients.

9. Work with the DBH Liaison to transition clients out of residential services and into outpatient treatment services.

10. Complies with all policies and procedures.

11. Performs other or related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

a. Knowledge of addiction theories, recovery processes and evidence-based practices in relapse prevention.

b. BA or AA degree in Human Services preferred or at least two (2) years’ experience working in the field of homeless services or related human services experience.

c. Knowledge and experience working with unhoused individuals and families.

d. Knowledge of community resources and services.

e. Strong computer literacy skills to maintain and manage participant files.

f. Registered or Certified in Substance Use Counseling with a valid California credential (RADT, CADC, SUDCC, etc.)

g. Knowledge of case management principles and interventions for hard-to-reach, difficult-to-serve populations are essential.

h. Experience with culturally diverse populations experiencing co-occurring disorders. 2 yrs. of experience providing substance abuse treatment is required.

i. Able to work independently, constructively, and effectively with others.

j. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with people.

k. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

l. Valid driver’s license and current auto insurance and registration.

m. This position requires the substance abuse counselor to meet with participants in the field (i.e. parks, public locations, etc.) as well as in their homes. Note that this is a “heavy driving” position.
