Position: Crisis Counselor
Classification: Full-time, Exempt
Location: Media, Pennsylvania
Reports to: Associate Director of Clinical Services
The Crisis Counselor supports the mission of DAP by providing crisis and supportive counseling on the hotline and in-person. This position is a full-time (40 hours per week) position.
Essential Duties
- Delivers crisis intervention, safety planning, and supportive counseling to individuals who have experienced domestic violence through the 24-hour hotline and in-person at DAP Main Office and Safe House
- Meets with clients via short-term counseling for follow up safety planning, crisis intervention and referrals as needed
- Facilitates appointments with walk-ins at the main office during designated walk-in hours
- Develops individual safety and services plans
- Provides follow-up contact for domestic violence victims
- Identifies opportunities to provide referrals
- Facilitates support groups and drop-in groups, as needed
- Maintains knowledge of other service providers so as to be able to provide appropriate information and referrals
- Facilitates referrals to DAP services including Legal, Safe House, Advocacy, Housing and Counseling
- Maintains up to date releases for agency participants and keep accurate documentation in client files
- Supports coordination of coverage for 24/7 hotline, as needed
- Provides direct support for hotline volunteers
- Assists with safe house intakes as needed
- Supervises intern tasks as needed
- Completes chart documentation in a timely manner
- Submits monthly counseling statistics in a timely manner
- Works cooperatively with other DAP staff to ensure holistic response and service delivery
- Participates in counseling and organizational staff meetings
- Attends PFA Court as needed
Qualifications and Competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, or related field
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including active listening
- Ability to support effective resolution of complex or sensitive disagreements or conflicts
- Ability to build constructive working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation, and mutual respect
- Ability to work well independently, setting high standards of performance for self and assuming responsibility and accountability for successful completion of assignments or tasks
- Ability to work well with others, promoting commitment within the team to achieve goals and objectives
- Interest in delivering trauma-informed human services in a complex environment, placing a high value on creating an environment that embraces and appreciates diversity
- Maintains confidentiality and earn through and respect through consistent honesty and professionalism in all interactions
- Knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence, understanding of the social service system, and experience in crisis intervention in a residential setting preferred
- Ability to work with diverse populations and in a multi-disciplinary setting
- Proven ability to maintain confidentiality regarding all activities at DAP, pertaining to both clients and staff, demonstrating consistent honesty and professionalism at all times.
Work Environment
- Work is primarily performed in as office setting or within secured residential safe house
- Ability to provide reliable transportation
Other Requirements:
- Successful completion of required organizational training within two weeks of hire
- Successful completion of required ongoing organizational training.
- Satisfactory Criminal Background Check and other organizationally required clearances
