Our Lady of the Lake Elementary School Counselor
Reports to: Principal Part-time (20 hours a week) Work Year: 10 months (school year)
Position Summary
The Elementary School Counselor supports the academic, social-emotional, and personal growth of students in grades K–5. This role promotes a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment by providing guidance services, collaborating with teachers and families, and implementing programs to meet the developmental needs of all students. All is done in the Catholic light.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Direct Student Services
- Provide short-term individual and small-group counseling addressing academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
- Conduct classroom lessons on topics such as self-management, conflict resolution, kindness, respect, and career awareness.
- Intervene in crisis situations to ensure student safety and emotional well-being.
2. Collaboration and Consultation
- Partner with teachers to identify student needs and implement strategies for academic and behavioral success.
- Communicate with parents/guardians to share resources, provide updates, and offer support.
- Participate in Student Support Teams, and IEP/AEP meetings as appropriate.
3. Advocacy and Resource Connection
- Advocate for equitable access to educational opportunities and resources for all students.
- Refer students and families to outside agencies for additional mental health, academic, or community support.
4. Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines.
- Stay current with best practices in counseling, child development, and trauma-informed care.
- Participate in professional development and district committees as required.
Qualifications
- Degree in School Counseling or related field.
- Current state certification/licensure as a School Counselor or ability to obtain one within three years.
- Knowledge of child development, counseling theories, and school counseling program models.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and families.
