Through comprehensive school counseling programs of developmental, preventative, remedial, and responsive services, school counselors address academic development, and personal/social development of students.

Major Performance Expectations:

1. Major Function: Development and Management of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program

  • Discusses the comprehensive school counseling program with the school administrators.
  • Develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program based on current school data.
  • Communicates the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to education stakeholders, including the Board of Trustees.
  • Maintains current appropriate resources for education stakeholders.
  • Uses the majority of time providing direct services through developed curriculum, and preventative and responsive services.

2. Major Function: Delivery of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program

  • Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented activities to meet student needs and school goals.
  • Assists students individually or in groups, with developing personal/social skills, goals and plans.
  • Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data.
  • Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational planning.
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Implements an effective referral and follow-up process.
  • Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
  • Provides appropriate information to staff related to the comprehensive school counseling program.

3. Major Function: Support of Schoolwide Culture and Behavior Management

  • Educate school faculty, parents, and neighborhood on topics such as bullying, anxiety, and suicide (not limited to these topics).
  • Develops a variety of special programs and classes (e.g. group and teamwork, leadership, bullying, coping with divorce or death, social skills) for the purpose of providing information to assist students in the successful acquisition of life and academic skills.
  • Identify areas for the improvement (schoolwide) i.e. behavioral issues, academic performance problems, and attendance non-compliance.
  • Schedule and facilitate classroom lessons on a variety of topics for the purpose of helping students academically, socially and emotionally reach success in school.

4. Major Function: Accountability

  • Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction and emphasis.
  • Measures results of the school counseling program activities and shares results.
  • Monitors students’ behavior, and academic performance and assists with appropriate interventions.

Experience/Personal Qualities

  • A minimum of 3 years counseling in a similar environment;
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, Master’s degree preferred;
  • NYS Students with Disabilities Certification required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $70,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
