About Job

The deadline to apply for the Capital Area Response Effort (CARE) Program Evening Advocate position is Monday, August 25th.

The Evening Advocate position is responsible for responding to police dispatch from six local police departments to provide survivors of domestic violence with immediate crisis intervention. This position provides short-term and long-term advocacy for survivors and is responsible for reaching out by phone to the survivor when the abusive partner was not arrested by police.

Position Responsibilities:

  • On-scene crisis intervention and telephone follow up
  • Provide survivors with information regarding the criminal justice process and crime victim rights
  • Provide survivors with knowledge of community referrals to assistance programs and resources
  • Provide survivors with education on the dynamics of domestic violence
  • Provide advocacy and transportation to emergency medical care, law enforcement interviews, and court hearings
  • Provide assistance with Personal Protection Orders, Victim Impact Statements, and Crime Victims Compensation
  • Maintain the program’s social media accounts and create agency newsletter
  • Maintain client files; data entry, filing, and sending out mailings

Position is full-time (forty hours per week) Monday through Thursday from 3:00 PM to 1:00 AM. Must be willing to be on-call some nights, weekends, and holidays when volunteer shifts are vacant. Must be willing to rotate the CARE dispatch phone with other staff and be willing to respond in case of emergencies. Salary is $38,646.00 per year,no benefits, non-negotiable. $18.58 per hour. Position is considered “At Will” employee of the City of Lansing and is contingent on grant funding renewal by the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA). This position reports to the Program Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree in social work, gender studies, criminal justice, or other relevant field, or in the process of completing a degree
  • Experience in advocacy or community engagement
  • Reliable and insured vehicle with a valid driver’s license
  • Must pass a criminal background check, including clearance through the Central Registry
