Viewpoint School is currently seeking a compassionate, collaborative, and clinically licensed part-time Primary and Lower School Counselor to support students' social, emotional, and psychological well-being in grades TK–5. Hours for this position will range between 15-20 hours per week for 10 months. The counselor will work closely with teachers, families, and school leadership to provide proactive and responsive services that foster a safe and supportive school climate. Candidates must be a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Clinical Psychologist, or be a credentialed school counselor with strong experience supporting students’ mental health and well-being in elementary school settings.
Primary Functions
- Provide short-term individual and small-group counseling to students with social, emotional, or behavioral concerns.
- Conduct classroom observations and collaborate with faculty to support students within the school environment.
- Consult regularly with faculty and parents to develop strategies that support student well-being and academic success.
- Work closely with Division Heads and Assistant Heads, Learning Specialist, MS and US Counselors, and Director of Student Wellness.
- Facilitate Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum across grade levels in collaboration with the Director of Student Wellness and Middle School Counselor.
- Serve as a crisis responder during the school day.
- Participate in grade level meetings and other multidisciplinary team discussions.
- Refer students and families to outside mental health professionals and community resources when needed.
- Maintain confidential and accurate documentation in accordance with state law and ethical guidelines.
- Provide training, workshops, or professional development to faculty and staff. Stay current on best practices and legal/ethical standards in school-based mental health care.
- Master’s or Doctoral degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
- One of the following credentials:
- Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) – California
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) – California
- Licensed Clinical Psychologist – California
- California Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential in School Counseling
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working with children and families in a school or clinical setting, preferably in K–8.
- Strong knowledge of child development, trauma-informed care, and culturally responsive practices.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing to a team-oriented school culture.
- Experience with evidence-based counseling practices and child development frameworks.
- Culturally competent and trauma-informed practice.
- Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic school environment.
