The Library Technician supports a multi-year project to digitize of government documents primarily consisting of technical reports, memoranda, and other publications. The Technicians will work on-site at a location in Washington, D.C. to prepare and scan the materials according to established guidelines and provided training. After scanning, the Technician will perform quality control and input the required metadata fields. The Technician will need at least some experience with digitization in a library setting. This is long-term, full-time (40 hours a week; Monday to Friday) benefited contract opportunity.
Responsibilities
- Retrieve materials and prepare them for scanning by removing stapling, paperclips, post-it notes, and tabs
- Scan materials using specialized scanner and software
- Inspect scanned files for quality and completeness
- Rescan any mis-scanned items
- Enter appropriate metadata for the scanned titles
- Reshelve materials once complete
- Associate’s degree, plus a minimum of one (1) year of library experience
- Experience with digitization processes, operating scanners, and scanning paper materials
- Experience with searching online catalogs
- Ability to carry and move items up to 44 lbs.
- Ability to follow guidelines
- Ability to work independently and in teams
- Ability to communicate with colleagues and supervisor
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office products
- Comfortable performing repetitive tasks
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a US government public trust security clearance.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with reviewing the quality of the scans for completeness and accuracy
- Experience with inventorying, shelf reading, and shelving material using the Library of Congress Classification System
- Experience with Voyager or similar ILS
- Knowledge of digital file processing and file naming
- Ability to learn LOC scanning procedures
- Detail-oriented and careful
Physical Requirements
Must be able to frequently move from place to place within the location; file and retrieve books and other items on high shelves; lift/push up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. of heavy boxes, books, and equipment; work in confined spaces; walk; bend; stoop; reach; and climb.
