The University of Miami Health System, "UHealth", Department of Pediatrics has an exciting opportunity for a Full-Time Licensed Mental Health Counselor to work in Miami.

The Licensed Mental Health Counselor works with individuals, families, and groups in treating mental, behavioral, and emotional problems and disorders. This position provides specialized knowledge in substance abuse, domestic abuse, grief counseling, workplace problems, and management consultation.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Advocates for and helps clients gain access to resources while confronting their personal issues.
  • Counsels and provides crisis intervention for patients, including assessment and treatment of behavioral problems.
  • Coaches patients on how to manage ongoing health conditions.
  • Provides therapy to help patients make positive behavior changes.
  • Assists patients and their families through individual, group, and education conferences to understand, accept, and follow treatment recommendations.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of counseling programs and clients’ progress in resolving identified problems and moving toward defined objectives.
  • Refers patients and their families to specialized treatment programs in accordance with their needs and monitors and evaluates their progress.
  • Collaborates with other departments to integrate care where needed.
  • Maintains current and appropriate documentation in patient chart.
  • Maintains confidentiality of records relating to clients’ treatment.
  • Acts as a mandated reporter in suspected child abuse cases.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.


Department Specific Functions:

  • Provides psychoeducational testing as needed to patients with hematological disorders under the supervision of team psychologist.
  • Provides consultation, individual, and family outpatient psychotherapy (brief and long-term).
  • Common presenting problems are: crisis intervention, pain management, internalizing problems, externalizing problems, adherence to medical regimen, and overall coping with treatment.
  • Consult with medical team and provide feedback after consultations.
  • Participate in patient educational activities held throughout the year.
  • Collect patient reported outcome data as standard of care as well as for research protocols as needed.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in relevant field required
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience with children/adolescents
  • Experience with patients with chronic illness is preferred
  • Valid State of Florida Mental Health Professional license required
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Ability to work in an outpatient clinic setting
  • Learning Agility: Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols, and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.
  • Communication: Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.
