Role and Facility Information

Northern Health is seeking an Adult Psychiatrist to join the Department of Psychiatry in Prince George at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC).

We welcome all interested candidates, including new in practice physicians and those holding a provisional license!

UHNBC is the Regional Hospital for Northern BC serving both the immediate population of Prince George (approximately 87,000) and outlying communities (total population approximately 400,000). It is the main teaching center for Medical Students in the Northern Medical Program of UBC and provides teaching for UBC Residents in several specialties. A Cancer Centre opened on the hospital site in fall 2012, including Radiation and Medical Oncology. The ongoing development of UHNBC as a Regional and teaching center makes this an exciting time to join the medical community in Prince George.

The In-Patient Psychiatric Unit has 20 ward beds, six on the Adolescent Unit, and four seclusion rooms. The Emergency Department also has two seclusion rooms.

Department members provide outpatient services to community teams and specialized mental health and substance use services. There are also community contracted services including Intersect, the Foundry, the BC Cancer Center for the North, and a six-bed detoxification unit.

The successful applicant will be involved in teaching medical students, family practice residents, and psychiatry residents from UBC. They can establish their own private practice as consultations are abundant. Income sources include fee-for-service (~$350,000), sessional contracts ($598.32 per 3-hour session), Medical On-Call Availability Program (~$165,000), rural retention flat fee ($19,121), rural retention premium (12.6%), and teaching. On-call coverage is 1:5.

Physicians practicing psychiatry in Prince George are eligible for a retention premium of 12.6% (~$44,100/year), a rural retention flat fee of $19,121, a $15,000 recruitment incentive, and a $9,000-$15,000 relocation package, in exchange for a 1-year return of service.

Prince George, known as British Columbia’s northern capital, is centrally located where the Nechako and Fraser Rivers meet. It offers affordable housing, above-average incomes, and numerous amenities including parks, lakes, sports facilities, and cultural venues. It’s an ideal place for professionals seeking rewarding careers and lifestyle.
