The School:

Beacon Day School and Learning Institute (BDS) is a California non-public school for children with autism and related disorders. BDS is fully accredited by the California Department of Education and serves students ages 5-22 from school districts across Southern California. BDS was founded in 2004 by Dr. Mary Jo Lang, a clinical psychologist, nurse practitioner and fellow autism parent, who recognized the unique and diverse academic, social, emotional, and physical needs of the autism population and set out to create a safe, compassionate, nurturing school community dedicated to improving the lives of students and their families.

The Beacon Day Learning Institute on Autism and Related Disorder focuses on education, research, and professional continuing education programs to support the well-being of people with autism and their families.

The Opportunity:

The Behavioral Interventionist (BI) / Safety Team Floater works with students with autism and related disorders ages 5-to-22 years-old and provides support for the Behavior Safety Team as required. This role is part of a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to providing integrative educational care that gives students the opportunity to lead meaningful lives by eliminating or replacing disruptive, harmful, or negative behaviors and replacing them with positive actions.

Position Perks:

  • Job stability with a 35-hour, Monday - Friday schedule following a traditional academic school year as well as an extended school year summer session.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:

  • Oversees classroom behaviors and academics under the direction of the teacher and Manager of Behavior Services for providing an opportunity for the student to participate in classroom activities.
  • Assists in implementing student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).
  • Implements and models alternative communication intervention strategies for teaching students to communicate effectively.
  • Monitors and records data on academic and/or behavioral goals.
  • Participates in mandatory training and other staff development programs as directed for the purpose of learning and enhancing new skillsets.
  • Report observations and incidents relating to specific students for the purpose of documenting and communicating information to appropriate personnel.
  • Assists with student behavior management on the vans to and from school and when assigned to transportation duties during community-based instruction.
  • Communicates with staff any necessary student information pertinent to maintaining the school’s positive teaching and behavioral environment.
  • Works in the classroom with staff and students on a rotating basis to prevent crisis situations.
  • Using Professional Assault Crisis Training (Pro-ACT) techniques identifies and appropriately responds to any verbal and physical containment situations as needed.
  • Assists in organizing and participating in community-based outings.
  • Maintains a positive and welcoming atmosphere that promotes collaboration.
  • Collaborates with school or district medical personnel in the coordination of medical care protocols if necessary.
  • Provides information relevant to the progress reports quarterly and reports for use in annual Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  • Provides additional support for the Behavior Safety Team as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma is required
  • Associate's or Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Experience in classroom and / or behavior management is highly preferred

Pay Rate $20 to 24 an hour

Physical Requirements

Work is performed under normal office or classroom conditions, but there are some minimal environmental risks or disagreeable conditions associated with the work.

Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation and without being a danger to themselves or others. Must meet all Pro-ACT standards and safety requirements (light duty is not available).

Pay: $20.00 - $24.00 per hour
