Counselor
The Counselor is a key member of the Student Services team, responsible for supporting students’ academic, career, and personal development. The role focuses on helping students identify and overcome barriers to success through counseling, guidance, and access to resources. The Counselor provides both direct services (individual and group counseling) and indirect services (referrals, workshops, and collaboration with staff and community partners) to ensure students can achieve their educational and vocational goals.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver individual and group counseling services that help students overcome personal, academic, and emotional barriers, improving overall student retention and success outcomes.
- Conduct comprehensive student assessments to identify needs and connect individuals with appropriate resources, strengthening the organization’s ability to support diverse student populations.
- Facilitate short-term intervention strategies that promote student well-being and readiness to engage in academic and career pathways.
- Create and lead support groups that foster a sense of community, resilience, and peer support among students.
Academic, Career & Post-Secondary Readiness
- Guide students through academic planning, career exploration, and post-secondary pathways, enabling informed decision-making and long-term success.
- Support students with college and vocational applications, financial aid processes, and program selection to increase placement rates and successful transitions.
- Administer and interpret career assessments to align student strengths with viable career opportunities, enhancing workforce readiness outcomes.
- Contribute to scholarship and advancement initiatives that expand access to educational and career opportunities.
Collaboration & Community Engagement
- Partner with teachers, staff, and leadership to address student needs, ensuring coordinated support systems that improve overall school performance.
- Build and maintain relationships with external agencies and community organizations to expand resources and referral networks available to students.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders regarding student progress, services, and interventions, strengthening trust and collaboration across the organization.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives, committees, and events that foster a cohesive and supportive institutional culture.
Program Development, Data & Continuous Improvement
- Collect, analyze, and maintain student data to inform decision-making, track outcomes, and improve service delivery across counseling programs.
- Develop and facilitate workshops on critical topics (e.g., mental health, career readiness, life skills) that address evolving student and staff needs.
- Maintain accurate and compliant student records, ensuring accountability and alignment with organizational and regulatory expectations.
- Contribute to ongoing program evaluation and enhancement efforts, driving continuous improvement and maximizing the impact of counseling services.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND OTHER EXPERIENCES
- A Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, counseling, or equivalent experience.
- License in the District of Columbia or working towards a license.
- A minimum of two years’ experience in mental health counseling, school counseling, or school social work.
- Experience in guiding and counseling linguistically and culturally diverse adult students is a plus.
- Proven ability to interact with populations of diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills in English.
- Ability to fluently speak a foreign language is required (Spanish or Amharic preferred).
The salary range is $55,000 to $114,100.55 per year based on experience.
Hybrid Schedule - 3 days onsite and 2 days working remote (2 evening shifts per week is required. The schedule can change as needed.)
Monday: 8:00am - 4:30pm
Tuesday: 12:00pm - 8:30pm
Wednesday: 8:00am - 4:30pm
Thursday: 12:00pm - 8:30pm
Friday: 8:00am - 4:00pm
