Counselor/Social Worker – Low Vision Program – Part-Time

The Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington (POB) was founded in 1936. POB is the largest local nonprofit dedicated to preserving sight and providing critical services to individuals experiencing vision loss in the D.C. metropolitan area. POB serves more than 13,000 people annually through educational programs, vision screenings, eyeglasses clinics, and low vision rehabilitation services.

Position Summary: POB is seeking a Part-time Counselor/Social Worker that is compassionate, innovative, and empathetic. You will play a key role in supporting individuals with low vision through person-centered care, emotional support, and advocacy. This role is ideal for someone passionate about empowering people with vision impairments to live independently and with dignity.

Reports to: POB Clinical Director

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct psychosocial assessments of individuals with low vision to understand needs, challenges, and goals.
  • Provide emotional support and counseling to clients coping with vision loss and related life adjustments.
  • Connect clients to appropriate federal, state and community resources, low vision rehabilitation, and support services.
  • Develop individualized care and support plans in collaboration with interdisciplinary team members and health insurance agencies.
  • Facilitate and/or co-lead support groups for individuals with vision impairments.
  • Advocate for client access to services including transportation, housing, and financial aid.
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation in client records and comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Participate in public education and outreach activities as needed.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to ensure continuity of care.
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • US Citizen
  • Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program.
  • Licensure as an LCSW, or LCSW-C (DC, MD, or VA license; multistate licensure preferred).
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Valid DC, MD, or VA state ID
  • At least 2 years of experience in a healthcare, rehabilitation, or community-based setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of aging, disability services, or visual impairment support systems.
  • Proficient in Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive), Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint),
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and documentation abilities.
  • Maintain professional appearance and attitude

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with grief counseling a plus.
  • Experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Familiarity with low vision assistive technology and rehabilitation services.
  • Bilingual strongly preferred
  • Experience facilitating group therapy or peer support groups.
  • Knowledge of local community resources and healthcare systems in the DC-MD-VA region.

Pay: $36.00 - $40.00 per hour
