Position Overview

The Director of the WIC Program is responsible for the strategic leadership, administration, and daily operations of the WIC Program at BMS Family Health and Wellness Centers. This role oversees program staff, operational performance, regulatory compliance, quality improvement initiatives, community outreach, and collaboration with healthcare providers and community partners.

The ideal candidate is an experienced leader with a strong background in maternal-child health, public health programming, and nutrition services who is committed to culturally competent and equitable care.

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Operations

  • Oversee all WIC program operations and ensure compliance with USDA, New York State Department of Health, and FQHC regulations 
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and workflows to support efficient program delivery 
  • Monitor program performance, staffing, budgets, and operational goals 
  • Ensure accurate documentation, reporting, and HIPAA compliance 

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Supervise and mentor multidisciplinary staff including nutritionists, breastfeeding coordinators, outreach workers, and support staff 
  • Lead recruitment, onboarding, staff development, and performance management 
  • Foster a collaborative and patient-centered workplace culture 

Community Outreach & Engagement

  • Develop outreach strategies to increase WIC enrollment and retention 
  • Build partnerships with hospitals, schools, providers, shelters, and community organizations 
  • Represent BMS at health fairs, community events, and public health initiatives 

Clinical & Nutrition Services Oversight

  • Ensure high-quality nutrition assessments, breastfeeding counseling, and referrals 
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams to coordinate comprehensive care for women, infants, and children 
  • Support evidence-based nutrition and maternal-child health initiatives 

Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure readiness for audits and state monitoring visits 
  • Analyze program data and implement quality improvement initiatives 
  • Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and organizational standards 


Requirements:

  

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Nutrition, Healthcare Administration, Social Work, or related field 
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in WIC, maternal-child health, public health, or community healthcare programs 
  • Strong knowledge of USDA WIC regulations and maternal-child health practices 
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills 
  • Experience with EMR/EHR systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and data reporting systems 
  • Commitment to culturally competent, patient-centered care 

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in a related field 
  • Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential 
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Creole 
  • Experience in an FQHC, community health center, or safety-net healthcare organization 

Work Environment & Travel

This position is primarily office-based with occasional travel between BMS sites, community events, and training opportunities. Some evening or weekend work may occasionally be required.
