Green Hills Area Education Agency is looking to fill an anticipated School Counselor Consultant.

  • Master’s Degree in education, school counseling, or related field.
  • Iowa instructional license with School Counselor endorsement.
  • Knowledgeable about the MTSS-SEBH/PBIS framework and implementation.


General Responsibilities:
Provides leadership and support related to the responsibilities and functions of the School Counselor role. This includes development and delivery of professional learning, coaching, and consultation for LEA and AEA staff. Helps ensure success for all learners. Provides appropriate resources and technical assistance to sustain an effective system of school counseling program services. Provides services that are customer-focused and based on client needs. Provides direct counseling services to students and staff through inter-district sharing agreements when needed. This may include serving as the assigned school counselor for one or more districts. Demonstrates flexibility in service delivery across multiple sites, schedules, and district contexts.


Specific Responsibilities:


  • Supports total school/community efforts to create a positive learning environment for students/children.
  • Serves as liaison among LEAs, district building(s), families, and community, and collaborates with various teams to assure positive outcomes for all learners.
  • Has deep knowledge of the ASCA National Model for school counselors and supports the application of the practices outlined in that model.
  • Models, implements, and assesses strategies related to learning, social, emotional, and behavioral needs to enhance educational programming for all learners.
  • Effectively manages responsibilities across multiple districts through shared service agreements, including scheduling, prioritization of services, and clear communication with district leadership regarding needs, capacity, and impact.
  • Provides ongoing support to educational staff related to applicable rules and laws.
  • Integrates research into the design of best practices.
  • Provides direct services to students, including individual counseling, small group counseling, and classroom guidance aligned to academic, social/emotional, and college/career domains.
  • Consults with teachers and administrators regarding best practices for classroom and building educational programs.
  • Follows policies, procedures, standards, and rules in accordance with national and state laws, the Iowa Department of Education, LEAs and GHAEA, which includes, but is not limited to, developing and maintaining proper and adequate records and documentation.
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of the role of the school counselor, provides guidance, and supports the application of the School Counselor responsibilities and expectations as outlined in the Iowa Administrative Rules.
  • May create, organize, and provide professional learning opportunities for school counselors, administrators, and other educators, including coaching and modeling evidence-based practices, providing resources, and support for MTSS/PBIS implementation throughout the domains of Academic, Social Emotional Behavioral Health, College and Career Readiness, and Future Ready.
  • May be responsible for regular and consistent communication with school counselors within the GHAEA regional area to support networking and knowledge of relevant, updated information within the field of school counseling.
  • Establishes, implements, and evaluates Agency activities in response to best practices and changing client needs.
  • Uses data to develop, implement, monitor, and adapt services to help ensure effective supports.

  • Participates in projects, committees, or activities to support the mission of the program and Agency.
  • Demonstrates self-discipline and initiative to produce high-quality, organized, and dependable results.
  • Conveys a positive and professional image to staff and the public.
  • Handles information in a confidential manner in accordance with established policies and legal requirements (FERPA, HIPAA, etc).
  • Pursues professional growth opportunities and relationships to keep current with and influence educational directions.
  • Develops and maintains effective team functioning through collegial problem solving, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.


Working Conditions

  • Regular travel requirements: Frequent travel is required between office locations and school sites within the agency's designated area. Travel often involves multiple trips within a single day and may necessitate extended periods in a vehicle. Occasional statewide or out-of-state travel for conferences, training sessions, and other professional development events is also expected.
  • Physical demands: In addition to regular standing and sitting, the role may involve prolonged periods of walking or standing, particularly during site visits or meetings. Occasional lifting and carrying of equipment and materials (weighing up to 25 pounds) is required. This may include setting up for presentations, carrying materials to different locations, and managing files or supplies. The role also requires sufficient mobility and dexterity to perform office-based tasks, including typing, filing, and other administrative duties.
  • Environmental conditions: Travel and on-site visits may expose employees to varying weather conditions and environments, including outdoor settings, school facilities, and community event locations. The ability to adapt to diverse environments, including loud or crowded spaces, is important.
  • Visual and auditory requirements: Effective performance in this role requires clear and efficient verbal communication with staff, students, and community members. Auditory ability is necessary for listening to presentations and participating in discussions, while visual acuity is required for reviewing documents, digital screens, and visual materials.

Mental demands: The role requires a high level of concentration, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. The ability to remain organized and flexible amidst frequent interruptions and variable work schedules is essential.
