Job Summary:
The Penobscot Nation is seeking a Teen Counselor Lead who is responsible for the development and implementation of teen programs that address the emotional, social, cognitive and behavioral development of youth. Programs can include college preparation, sports, cultural activities, nature activities, prevention skills, and educational activities. The Teen Counselor Lead will provide activities in a clean safe environment and promote a healthy lifestyle, serving as a positive role model. The Teen Counselor Lead will also be responsible for maintaining attendance records, reporting any issues to the Youth Coordinator, and carrying out programs. All youth program employees are mandated reporters.
Qualifications Required:
· High School diploma or GED required.
· Proven experience in coordinating activities for youth preferred.
· First Aid and CPR required or ability to obtain certification within 3 months of hire date.
· Background check, criminal record check and fingerprinting required.
· General knowledge or willing to gain knowledge in areas, such as youth development, suicide prevention, substance abuse and the impact on families, child abuse/neglect, domestic violence/family violence, prevention programming and any other youth related issues.
· Must be able to attend trainings and workshops as necessary and be available to work evening and weekend hours.
· Must be 21 years of age or older.
· Must have a valid State of Maine Driver’s License.
· Candidate must undergo a character investigation, including a criminal background check as required by P.L. 101-630.
· Must have successful Tb test result.
· Must successfully pass pre-employment screenings as stated in Penobscot Nation policies and Procedures.
· Native American Preference will be adhered to in accordance with the Penobscot Nation personnel Policies and Procedures
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
· Assists in the development, scheduling and implementation of age appropriate youth activities effectively and safely on a daily basis.
· Maintains records for all youth and follows special needs behavioral guide created with parents.
· Coordinates and plan field trips.
· Maintains incident/accident reports and assumes responsibility for notifying parents when incidents/accidents occur.
· Develops program and activity plan, including budget, for Youth Coordinator approval. Communicates appropriately and effectively with youth, parents and community.
· Monitors the use of equipment and facilities and report any safety issues that need to be address to the Youth Coordinator.
· Collaborates when appropriate and necessary with other Tribal Departments as well as other Tribes and non-tribal entities.
· Assists in the development of mentoring and apprenticeship opportunities for the youth. Recruits appropriate volunteers/mentors for the youth program.
· Assists with nutritional activities and cooking in support of promoting health habits.
· Complete yearly professional training modules for the Boys and Girls Club
· Assist in Child and Adult Food Care Program (CACFP)/ Summer Food Program reporting, shopping and preparing meals
· Complete yearly professional training in behavior, health, bullying, and positive relationships with youth
· Yearly training in mandated reporting
· Yearly training in CPR and First Aid
· Training in cultural activities and programs through the cultural train the trainer workshops
· Assist in grant reporting and writing
· Recruit and retention of teens and young adults to participate and attend programming and activities
· Supervision of Teen Councilor
· Carrying out and creating Teen Center needs assessments and program satisfaction surveys
· Complete monthly reports to the Youth Coordinator
· Meet weekly for team meetings and quarterly meetings with supervisors
· Interacts harmoniously and effectively with others, focusing upon the attainment of Penobscot Nation goals and objectives through a commitment to teamwork.
· Conforms to acceptable attendance/punctuality standards as expressed in the Employee Handbook.
· Performs other duties as assigned as required.
Physical Demands/Conditions/Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, kneel, bend, crouch, run, reach overhead, grasp, push, climb, pull, use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, controls, or equipment. The employee must be able to work at a computer terminal for extended periods of time.The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
