Join a highly collaborative Oral Surgery team at the College of Dentistry and Hawkeye Oral Surgery, where you’ll provide specialized nursing care in a fast-paced clinical and academic setting — all within a consistent Monday–Friday, 8–5 schedule. This role combines hands-on surgical nursing, patient education, implant program coordination, and clinical instruction, offering meaningful impact without night or weekend shifts. Anticipated start date mid-late May.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Excellence
- Provide specialized nursing care for oral surgery patients receiving local anesthesia, moderate sedation, and general anesthesia
- Prepare patients for procedures (health histories, IV access, medication administration, monitoring)
- Deliver comprehensive pre-, intra-, and post-operative care and recovery monitoring
- Educate patients and families before and after surgery
- Triage patient calls using critical thinking and professional judgment
- Monitor patients during sedation and anesthesia procedures
- Serve on the College of Dentistry Medical Alert Team
- Maintain emergency carts and ensure regulatory compliance
- Maintain ACLS, BLS, and BLS Instructor certification
- Assist in coordinating the dental implant practice and surgical case planning
- Manage inventory and ordering of medications, implants, grafting materials, and surgical supplies
- Oversee maintenance and troubleshooting of clinical equipment
- Coordinate implant scheduling and vendor communication
- Provide clinical instruction to dental students, residents, and staff
- Teach aseptic technique, IV placement, vital sign monitoring, and patient management
- Provide BLS certification and educational presentations
- Mentor team members and provide performance feedback
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with regulations related to controlled substances, implants, and tissue utilization
- Participate in quality assurance initiatives and evidence-based care improvements
- Monitor daily clinic census and support safe, efficient staffing

$74,150 to commensurate (Pay Grade: 5A)
P&S Status: Regular

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Current license as Registered Nurse to practice nursing in Iowa.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor certification or obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- 3 years relevant clinical or surgical nursing experience.
- Proficiency in electronic health record charting and clinical scheduling software.
- Patient interaction and education experience.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience monitoring patient undergoing procedures utilizing local anesthesia, conscious and deep sedation/general anesthesia.
- Clinical experience in oral surgery or related field including experience with dental implant surgeries and instrumentation.
- Experience establishing IV access.
- Experience with functional supervision and education of staff and students.
