Position Overview
The Peer Support Specialist with Leadership Skills is a frontline role that combines lived experience with formal leadership responsibilities to promote recovery, reduce stigma, and enhance the quality of care. This role involves providing peer-supported services, mentoring peers and new staff, facilitating groups, and collaborating with clinical teams to ensure person-centered, recovery-oriented care.
Key Responsibilities
- Lived-Experience Collaboration
- Share recovery experiences to inspire hope and foster a sense of possibility for clients.
- Serve as a visible, hopeful role model for staff and clients.
- Individual Peer Support
- Conduct one-on-one peer support sessions, crisis de-escalation, and wellness planning.
- Assist clients with goal setting, coping skills, and community integration.
- Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in accordance with policy.
- Group Facilitation
- Lead psychoeducation, wellness, and recovery-oriented groups (e.g., peer support groups, coping skills, relapse prevention).
- Develop and adapt group content to meet diverse client needs.
- Care Coordination & Collaboration
- Partner with clinicians, case managers, and family/caregivers as appropriate to support recovery goals.
- Assist with service access, resource navigation, and referral to community supports.
- Leadership and Mentoring
- Provide mentorship to peers and new staff; assist with onboarding and onboarding-related training.
- Participate in supervision, quality improvement initiatives, and program development.
- Help model trauma-informed, culturally responsive care.
- Program Development & Outreach
- Contribute to program policies, manuals, and materials.
- Participate in outreach to the community and internal stakeholders to promote services.
- Documentation & Compliance
- Document services and outcomes in accordance with agency policies and HIPAA/privacy regulations.
- Maintain accurate logs, progress notes, and data for program evaluation.
- Crisis Intervention
- Recognize crisis indicators and apply de-escalation techniques; follow facility protocols for emergencies.
- Continuous Growth
- Engage in ongoing training related to peer support, recovery principles, ethics, and cultural competence.
Qualifications
Required
- Lived experience with mental health challenges and a demonstrated path to recovery.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in peer support, recovery services, or related roles.
- Proven leadership capabilities (e.g., team mentoring, supervision support, project coordination).
- Ability to facilitate groups and provide individual peer support.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations.
- Knowledge of community resources, treatment modalities, and recovery-oriented practice.
- Familiarity with consent, confidentiality, and relevant privacy regulations (e.g., HIPAA).
- Bilingual/bicultural competence may be preferred depending on client population.
Preferred
- Certification or credential in peer support (e.g., Certified Peer Specialist, Recovery Support Specialist) or equivalent training.
- Experience in crisis intervention or de-escalation.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed and culturally responsive care.
- CADC, LPC, LCSW, or equivalent licensure is a plus but not required.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Additional education or certifications in mental health, social services, or related fields preferred.
Work Conditions
- May include shift work, evenings, weekends, and on-call coverage as required.
- Office-based with some community-based outreach; occasional travel may be necessary.
- Fast-paced environment with exposure to emotional Stress; strong boundary-setting is essential.
