Description
Senior Counselors (SCs) generally have at least one year of experience working with school-age students and are expected to be role models and leaders of the staff. SCs are responsible for planning, setting the tone, and establishing the safety/care of the entire bunk. They can facilitate almost any general camp activity and may have training in specialized activities.
Dates and Hours
Training: June 1 - 5
Camp: June 8 - August 7, generally 8:00am-4:15pm on Monday and 8:45am-4:15pm Tuesday-Friday
Regular Job Duties
Under the supervision of Unit Heads, general daily responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
  • Care for and general welfare of everyone in their bunk; safety is top priority
  • Create and maintain an open-minded, safe, positive, and fun environment that campers are excited to be part of
  • Mentor and work collaboratively with Jr. Counselors to facilitate all-camp activities with the bunk
  • Collaborate with Jr. Counselors when dealing with any camper issue or misbehavior and ensure it is communicated to the supervisory staff
  • Facilitate high-quality daily activities for our campers; modifying an activity to provide accommodations to ensure all campers are included
  • Provide ongoing informal feedback to Jr. Counselors based on observed behaviors
  • Other duties, as assigned
Qualifications
  • 18 years of age or older (may be substituted for prior Jr. Counselor experience work at Camp at the J or another camp)
  • Secondary education and/or training in elementary education, child psychology, or related field (preferred)
  • Prior experience working with children, families, or other related roles
  • Actively utilizes empathy, patience, and intentional positivity in the workplace
  • Able to coach members of your bunk group towards successful outcomes
  • Able to pivot from planned activities on short notice
  • Ability to accept guidance, constructive feedback, and support from teammates
  • Ability to sit, stand, kneel, and stretch for long periods of time
  • Ability to work outside in high degree temperatures
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
