Job Summary:

The Barron Center is a long-term care facility, owned and operated by the City of Portland, and is Maine’s largest skilled nursing facility. This position involves professional social work with long-term care residents and their families, assisting in their adjustment to the facility, and working as a team member to provide for and assure quality of life for facility residents. Qualified candidates will have at least one year of experience in long-term care or within geriatric care work, including knowledge of community resources. The Licensed Social Worker designation is required for consideration and hire.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Shares responsibility for telephone and walk-in referrals.
  • Provides appropriate community referrals.
  • Meets with residents and their family upon admission, determines psychosocial needs, and formulates an appropriate care plan.
  • Visits residents on a regular and as-needed basis.
  • Maintains contact with families, involving them in resident’s care as appropriate.
  • Acts as an advocate for residents and their rights.
  • Participates in team conferences and psychiatric consultations.
  • Works as discharge planner arranging for services at time of discharge.
  • Responsible for preparing and maintaining social service documentation in accordance with State regulations.


Required Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Social Work or a related field. Licensed Social Worker designation is required.
  • Minimum one year experience in long term care or geriatric care work
  • Experience in family or group counseling
  • Working knowledge of social services system and community social resources
  • Ability to prepare complete and valid case records
  • Ability to apply policies and procedures to specific cases.
  • Ability to assist families and individuals with social and economic planning.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other social workers, institutional and public officials, and other community contacts


Expected Hours/Schedule:


Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm.

The successful candidate will be subject to a pre-employment physical exam. Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.


Salary & Benefits:


This is a union position - CEBA, Grade 15 - Starting salary range is $25.95 - $29.28 per hour, based on experience.
