Job Summary

: Promotes patients’ continued well-being through providing direct psychological services promoting optimal individual, interpersonal, and social functioning. Responsible for evaluating psychological services to patients. Conducts ongoing clinical research evaluating the program’s overall effectiveness and acceptability to patients, referral sources, and staff.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required

  • Clinical expertise in psychotherapeutic processes, crisis intervention, skills in working with the chronically mentally ill population as well as with individuals and families undergoing acute episodes of psychiatric distress; skills in diagnosis and assessment in a hospital setting.
  • Ability to work with community support systems, health care, and human service resources, courts and police, etc. as part of a comprehensive community mental health team and to represent the Retreat in the community.
  • Recognizes and appropriately evaluates and responds to crisis and risk situations.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to the professional code of ethics and the state mental health code.
  • Ability to work as part of a comprehensive mental health team and to represent the agency in the community.
  • Good organizational skills and administrative abilities: must be computer literate.
  • Flexibility in days and hours available for scheduled work, including weekends.
  • Knowledge of specialty populations and treatment modalities, as appropriate to individual programs.


Qualifications

  • Completion of degree requirements for licensing as a Psychologist - Doctorate in the state of Vermont by the beginning of the Fellowship
  • If not otherwise licensed as a therapist in State of VT (as LCMHC, for example), must be on VT roster of unlicensed psychotherapists
  • Has completed a supervised and structured APA accredited doctoral internship training program in professional psychology by the beginning of the Fellowship. The program satisfies licensure requirements in Vermont
  • At least two years of work experience in mental health or human services


Overview

Fellows in this track split their time (approximately equally) between two programs:

Abigail Rockwell Children’s Center (ARCC) Is a Multi-track Residential Treatment Center Providing Expert Care For Children Ages 6 To 14. Located In a Home-style Dwelling That Accommodates Up To 8 Children, This Setting Is Ideal For Specialized Programming To Help Children Who Are Transitioning From Childhood To Adolescence. Operating Under a Biopsychosocial Model, The Abigail Rockwell Children’s Center Uses Several Therapy Modalities Including

  • individual therapy
  • group therapy
  • family/sibling therapy
  • milieu therapy (ongoing teaching in a safe environment)
  • recreation/team building groups.


Emphasizing a family-oriented approach, the Center also offers family outreach therapy. Together with local agency representatives, we work with the family to provide in-home parent training, crisis planning, family and sibling therapy, and home visits to practice family work.

Adolescent Inpatient Program offers crisis stabilization, specialized treatment, and aftercare planning for young people ages 12 to 18.

The Adolescent Inpatient Program employs a multidisciplinary team approach that is short-term, strengths-based, and skills oriented. Time in the hospital varies, and our team helps provide as safe and responsive return to the community as is reasonable and supported by caring adults involved in the teenager’s treatment and aftercare planning. During their stay, patients are provided with the following treatment opportunities;

  • Psychiatric assessment and treatment
  • Individual and family meetings with a Social Worker and Psychiatric Provider
  • DBT Skills Groups to learn effective ways of coping with difficult emotions and problems
  • Group Psychotherapy
  • Milieu Support from nursing staff to coach and practice positive coping skills as challenges arise
  • Ongoing case management toward coordinating services with the providers in the community.


Job Responsibilities:

Abigail Rockwell Children’s Center (ARCC)

  • Psychotherapy group facilitation (1-2 groups per day)
  • Individual therapy (caseload of 3-6 children)
  • Family meetings
  • Daily treatment team meetings
  • Collaborate on program design
  • Coordination of care with psychiatry, social work, occupational therapy and external providers and agencies


Adolescent Inpatient Program

  • Group facilitation (2-3 groups per week for patients awaiting placement)
  • Psychotherapy group coverage (as needed when regular group facilitators are not available)
  • Substance use treatment – individual and group
  • Individual therapy (caseload of 2-4 children)


Core Competencies

Provides direct collaborative clinical care (individual psychotherapy, supportive therapy, family/marital, and/or group therapy) to patients to promote change according to patient’s treatment plan. Demonstrates a sophisticated and an appropriate professional level of clinical independence.

Provides quality service to patients, including clinical care and documentation. Adheres to agency’s code of ethics, standards, policies and procedures as well as the state mental health code. Provides direct service in accordance with department’s productivity and other performance standards. Consistently demonstrates high levels of responsibility.

Provides independent patient/family assessments and treatment as needed and collaborates with hospital multidisciplinary teams as clinically determined. Forms therapeutic relationships with patients integrating theoretical knowledge effectively and ethically in treatment.

Collaborates in program development and evaluation in specified areas. Develops and recommends changes to improve service delivery as needed. Implements changes and new programming to meet both clinical and fiscal standards as determined by the program director.

Coordinates and communicates with other providers and service components to assure continuity of care and the provisions of comprehensive services.

Provides clinical services or referrals to patients’ families to enhance adaptive functioning as needed, including family therapy and supportive family contacts using knowledge of evidence-based practices.

Assists in receiving authorization from managed care/insurance companies.

Makes skilled judgments regarding clinical risk assessments.

Provides clinical supervision to interns and under the directive of the program director.

Will contribute to the design, statistical analysis, and write-up of research projects as needed

Provides casework services to a caseload of clients including, but not limited to, program intake, assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, aftercare plans, discharge summaries, collateral contacts, etc.

Cooperates in marketing of retreat corporate and departmental services and acts as an ambassador to all potential customers.
