Psychiatric Technician

Location: Correctional Facility – San Diego, CA

Position Overview

We are looking for dedicated and compassionate Psychiatric Technicians to provide behavioral and psychiatric nursing care to mentally or developmentally disabled patients/youth in a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • Minimum 12 continuous months of experience within the last 3 years performing services similar in scope to this role in a public or private institution.
  • Internship experience does not count toward the required experience.

Licensure:

  • Must possess and maintain a current and valid license issued by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) to practice in the State of California.

Language Proficiency:

  • Must be fluent in English and able to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Must be able to read, understand, and write effectively in English.

Key Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Institution’s CEO/CNE or designee, the Psychiatric Technician will:

  • Provide basic behavioral and psychiatric nursing care to mentally or developmentally disabled patients/youth.
  • Conduct daily clinical rounds and monitor patients/youth for signs and symptoms of mental illness.
  • Administer medications and treatments, including hypodermic injections, under the supervision of an RN or MD.
  • Record vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration) and perform other general nursing procedures.
  • Participate in treatment team meetings and contribute to the development of individualized treatment plans.
  • Facilitate group and individual therapy sessions as directed.
  • Coordinate and communicate with custody and healthcare staff to ensure patient safety and continuity of care.
  • Observe and report significant changes in patients’/youths’ physical or behavioral condition.
  • Assist in scheduling and coordinating clinical appointments and ensure attendance.
  • Perform first responder duties, including CPR and first aid, when required.
  • Complete accurate documentation in accordance with institutional procedures.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment for all patients/youth.
