Overview
The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) position provides an opportunity for emerging professionals in the field of addiction counseling to gain supervised experience working directly with individuals in recovery. Under the guidance of licensed and credentialed staff, the CIT supports the delivery of clinical and rehabilitative services that promote recovery, wellness, and personal growth.

This role is ideal for individuals pursuing licensure in addiction counseling who are eager to apply classroom knowledge in a structured, supportive environment. The CIT facilitates group and individual sessions, documenting client progress, and implementing treatment goals while utilizing evidence-based practices in substance use treatment.

As a Counselor in Training, you will support individuals and families through their challenges. This role is designed for those eager to learn and grow while providing essential services to a diverse clientele. You’ll gain hands-on experience in various therapeutic techniques and approaches, all while contributing to a supportive environment that fosters healing and growth.

What you’ll do

  • Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions under the supervision of licensed professionals.
  • Participate in crisis intervention strategies to support clients in distress.
  • Conduct intake assessments and assist with diagnostic evaluations to determine client needs.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop comprehensive treatment plans.
  • Engage in motivational interviewing techniques to empower clients towards positive change.
  • Document patient care activities accurately, adhering to HIPAA regulations and medical terminology standards.
  • Support case management efforts by maintaining accurate medical records and participating in clinical research initiatives.
  • Complete all clinical documentation including, but not limited to, intake assessment, treatment plan, progress notes, and discharge summary

Basic qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a genuine desire to help others.
  • Basic understanding of addiction counseling concepts and techniques.

Minimum qualifications

  • Preferably a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field
  • Will accept a High School Diploma or equivalent with verifiable experience in addiction counseling or behavioral health services
  • Familiarity with evidence-based treatment models such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), or the Stages of Change model
  • Familiarity with ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding for accurate medical documentation.
  • Knowledge of recovery principles, trauma-informed care, and ethical boundaries in clinical practice
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and client interaction
  • Cultural competence and sensitivity in working with diverse populations
