Program Overview

NYCID operates and partners with many New York City Department of Education school buildings across Staten Island. Our K–8 Afterschool programs run on school days from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, providing students with a wide variety of enrichment opportunities.

While program sizes vary from small to large, every site prioritizes creating a safe, supportive, and fun learning environment. Students participate in a structured schedule of small-group enrichment activities, including:

  • Literacy
  • Physical Fitness
  • Civic Engagement
  • Social-Emotional Learning
  • STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math)

At NYCID, our mission is to deliver exceptional afterschool experiences rooted in a youth development framework. We are committed to giving our full attention to the growth and well-being of our students, while also supporting and partnering with their families.

General Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Site Director, Group Leaders support students with homework and lead engaging programs that foster youth enrichment, leadership development, and recreational activities. Group Leaders are expected to actively contribute to the creation of lesson plans and consistently deliver lessons across focus areas such as STEM, Leadership, Literacy, and the Arts. They are also responsible for supervising participants to ensure a safe, supportive environment where appropriate behavior is maintained at all times.

Who We Are Looking For:

NYCID is looking for Group Leaders who are interested in and have experience working with the Elementary (K-5th Grade) or Middle School (6th-8th Grade) population and can commit to the hours and days provided. Hours are Monday-Friday 2:00pm-5:45pm

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidate should possess a minimum of a High School Diploma and at least 2 years working with children ages 5 - 14.

The candidate should bring to the position:

● Adept ability to motivate, engage and develop rapport quickly with children and young adults

● A high level of energy, enthusiasm, and patience

● A friendly and approachable personality

● Knowledge, passion, and an in-depth understanding of classroom materials, pertaining to subject matter

● Ability to aid in classroom management

● Ability to work with minimal supervision

● Excellent written and oral communication skills

● Superior preparation and organizational skills

● Computer literacy skills

Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

● Work closely with Program Director to plan, organize, develop, and implement program activities in areas such as, but not limited to, youth enrichment, leadership development, and physical activity

● Supervise youth and monitor behavior to ensure safety and appropriateness

● Work closely with students to encourage movement, creativity, and the development of specific skills

● Assist in developing lesson plans pertaining to specific activities including, but not limited to, STEM, Leadership, Literacy, Sports and Art

● Provide Program Director with creative ways for participants to showcase their progress accomplishments, projects, etc.

● Communicate effectively with students and parents

● Assist in ensuring that attendance sign-in sheets are completed accurately

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

● Desire to learn and grow professionally.

● Knowledge of conflict resolution and/or mediation practices

● Knowledge of developing effective lesson plans to ensure student learning and participation

● Ability to control student behaviors and ensure a productive learning environment

● Capability of creating projects which capture attention yet are educational and enjoyable

● Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously

● Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality, integrity and professionalism

● Self-starter attitude

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $16.50 - $19.00 per hour

Expected hours: 15 per week

Work Location: In person
