Job Summary: The Genetic Counselor provides comprehensive genetic counseling and risk assessment of individuals and families at increased risk for cancer. Works independently and functions as part of a comprehensive patient care team by collaborating with physicians and other health care professionals.
Minimum Education: Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) and a Valid State of Oklahoma Genetic Counselor License. A valid driver license, Motor Vehicle Report and proof of vehicle liability insurance in the amount required by SFHS guidelines will be required.
Work Experience: 1 - 2 years previous experience counseling patients and families regarding cancer related genetic risk, prenatal assessment and pediatric disorders.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong interpersonal skills to interact with leadership, patients and interdisciplinary care team. Demonstrates ability for a high degree of analysis, critical thinking and judgment in the provision of patient care. Familiarity with PCs and clinical information systems. Strong psychological counseling skills. Demonstrates strong customer service skills and values aligned with health system mission, vision and values. Ability to work in a complex, emotional and stressful environment.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Demonstrates competency in the provision of comprehensive genetic counseling and risk assessment of individuals and families in the following patient populations: 1) high risk pregnancy management, 2) newborns, infants, and children with birth defects or inherited disorders, 3) individuals at increased risk for cancer or other inherited disorders, 4) pre and post counseling in conjunction with medically necessary genetic testing. Obtain and evaluate individual, family and medical histories to determine genetic risk for genetic/medical conditions and diseases in patient, family members and/or offspring. Reviews pertinent medical records and prepares for clinic visits. Documents patient visits, clinical information, and recommendations as appropriate for genetic counseling. Assesses patient's physical, emotional, and financial needs in planning for appropriate care. Provides information about the medical genetic diagnosis, etiology, inheritance patterns, and risk of occurrence. Identifies and coordinates genetic laboratory testing, provides results to physicians and patients and coordinates scheduling of follow-up appointments. Obtains informed consent and authorization for testing. Participates in the development of the Cancer Genetics program through networking with medical providers on a local, regional, and national level. Serves as a resource for professionals and the public regarding genetic issues related to cancer and cancer development. Assists with the implementation of standards based on guidelines from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and the American College of Medical Genetics and using NCCN guidelines.
Decision Making: Independent judgment in making decisions from many diversified alternatives that are subject to general review in final stages only.
Working Relationships: Coordinates activities of others (does not supervise). Works directly with patients and/or customers. Works with internal customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with external customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff. Works frequently with individuals at Director level or above.
