Position Description
Peer Support Specialist
Purpose: To provide compassionate, person-centered support to individuals who are survivors of non-fatal overdose, those at risk of overdose, individuals struggling with substance use, and their families and friends. The role emphasizes recovery-oriented care including harm reduction and linkage to community resources.
Scope: This position interacts with the following areas:
· Recovery Resource Center Program Director and Assistant Program Director
· Multidisciplinary Oversight Team
· Community partner agencies
Working Relationships:
· Reports directly to the Program Director and Peer Services Coordinator
· Reports periodically to the Crisis Center, Inc. Leadership team
Qualifications:
· High school diploma or GED required
· Minimum of two years of relevant program or lived experience in recovery support services
· Certified, or eligible for certification, as a Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) with the Alabama Department of Mental Health within three (3) months of hire
· Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism and represent the agency with integrity
· Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences
· Comfortable working with individuals with both substance use disorder and mental health disorders
· Effective use of technology applications for data entry, reporting and communication
· Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends on occasion.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Establish supportive, collaborative relationships with individuals who are survivors of non-fatal overdose or those at risk of overdose, individuals with substance use disorders, and their families/friends.
2. Conduct intakes and follow-up with clients, in-person and via telehealth -- working in office setting as well as in the field, i.e. street outreach, healthcare settings, and with community partners.
3. Collaborate with mental health, addiction treatment, and community service providers to coordinate comprehensive care for clients.
4. Support recovery planning by empowering clients to actively participate in their treatment and recovery support teams.
5. Provide crisis support by drawing upon personal lived experience in recovery to instill hope and resilience.
6. Link clients to community-based services and resources, and share practical skills related to health, wellness, and recovery.
7. Deliver individualized, culturally responsive, and strengths-based support tailored to each client’s needs and preferences.
8. Advocate for client needs and perspectives in multidisciplinary team meetings.
9. Conduct overdose prevention education and community outreach activities.
10. Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of the Recovery Resource Center.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $37,000.00 - $39,000.00 per year
