General Description:

A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

Qualifications:

 Has successfully breastfed at least one baby for 6 months (does not have to be currently breastfeeding)

 Must be or have been a WIC participant

 Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding, and wants other mothers to enjoy a positive experience.

 Can work at least 40 hours a week depending on the needs of the WIC agency. Part-time upon direction of the breastfeeding managers.

 Is willing to make and receive phone calls

 Has reliable transportation

 Has flexibility in work schedule outside of regular clinic hours

 Must have excellent customer service and communication skills.

 Must be comfortable with some computer applications including Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.

Job Description:

 Educates WIC participants and community partners on the advantages of breastfeeding and management of a normal breastfeeding experience.

 Responsible for counseling breastfeeding and pregnant mothers in WIC waiting area, by telephone, text message, and group settings when available.

 Receives a caseload of WIC mothers and makes routine periodic contacts with all mothers assigned.

 Keeps accurate records of all contacts and enters into WIC charting system.

 Identifies breastfeeding experiences that are not the norm and makes appropriate referrals.

 Acts a positive role model, interacting effectively and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, education, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, and members of public and professional groups.

 Respects each mother by keeping her information strictly confidential.

 Participates in assigned health fairs and community events/projects and promotes the breastfeeding peer counselor program.

As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as Breastfeeding Peer Counselor 1-3 depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). The minimum – maximum salary for the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor 1-3 is $24,960 – $36,400
