Responsibilities

This position is as a Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC). The Primary Care Behavioral Health Program provides a team-based healthcare approach by integrating behavioral health providers and registered nurses into Primary Care Clinics to deliver evidence-based assessments, treatment, prevention, and management of behavioral health issues and related health conditions for Military Health System beneficiaries.



Major Duties

  1. Clinical Role: Serves as a Clinical Psychologist BHC within the Clinic and BHSOC Primary Care Behavioral Health program. Conducts mental health diagnoses per DSM standards, provides individual and group treatments, and maintains documentation following SOPs and regulations. Assesses and manages acute and chronic behavioral health and medical conditions, providing targeted interventions and biopsychosocial evaluations. Conducts group classes on stress management, relaxation, social skills, smoking cessation, and evidence-based treatments for conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, insomnia, pain, diabetes, and weight management. Offers clinical consultation and educates clinic staff on primary care behavioral health principles.
  2. Consultation and Education: Collaborates with primary care providers to set treatment priorities, educates staff on behavioral health principles through training, and reviews care appropriateness. Establishes cooperative agreements among providers, monitors community resource use, and evaluates treatment outcomes using behavioral measures.
  3. Quality and Performance Initiatives: Implements clinical standards, participates in quality assurance activities, evaluates clinical records, and monitors risk management. Works to increase clinic penetration by targeting conditions suitable for BHC intervention, enhances clinical productivity, and revises procedures as needed.
  4. Professional Development: Develops and evaluates training activities, assesses scope of practice, and ensures adherence to standards.
  5. Other Duties: Performs additional tasks as assigned.


Qualifications

Applicants must meet education and experience requirements. Relevant experience includes providing behavioral health assessments, therapy, and interdisciplinary collaboration. A doctoral degree in clinical psychology (Ph.D. or equivalent) and a valid, unrestricted license to practice psychology in the U.S. are required. Experience at the GS-12 level or equivalent is typical for this role. No substitution of education for experience is permitted.
