About Job

(posted 8/15/25)

Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Psychology position in applied experimental psychology with a specialty in health psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, community psychology, or other applied area. This is a full-time position beginning July 1, 2026. Please visit this web page (https://www.hollins.edu/about-hollins/jobs/) to learn more about Hollins; its commitment to belonging, pluralism, and student success; faculty development; the university’s students; and the Roanoke Valley.

Position and Qualifications

Psychology is consistently one of the most popular undergraduate majors at Hollins, and the department offers B.A. and B.S. degrees, as well as a B.A. with a concentration in clinical and counseling skills. The position carries the equivalent of six courses per academic year.

Successful applicants should show a strong commitment to teaching at a liberal arts institution and demonstrate the ability to teach students from a broad range of backgrounds. They must be able to teach research design with a lab and/or research statistics and at least one course in the university’s general education program. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to develop courses in their area of specialization to complement and diversify the current psychology curriculum. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in psychology or a related field in hand by July 1, 2026, and those who can demonstrate the potential for cross-disciplinary collaboration with other departments such as public health, biology, business, and/or education are preferred.

Candidates should also show evidence of scholarly promise and accomplishment. A research focus in an area such as social justice, mental health disparities, underrepresented populations, and/or investigation of social problems is preferred. Additionally, the selected candidate must be able to mentor undergraduate research by involving undergraduates in their own research program as well as overseeing projects in areas of student interest. Hollins strongly supports experiential learning through undergraduate research and connections with the Roanoke community, and it annual Science Seminar, currently in its 67th year, highlights student research in the sciences and mathematics.

Application Process

Application review will begin September 15, 2025 and will continue until the position is filled. To apply, candidates should submit the following materials:

  • A cover letter, no longer than three pages, describing teaching and research interests (and if ABD, detailing progress toward the Ph.D.)
  • A curriculum vitae

Candidates who are advanced to the second stage of review will be invited to submit the following materials:

  • A teaching statement
  • Evidence of effective teaching (e.g., course evaluations or teaching observations)
  • A research statement, including how one’s research program could incorporate undergraduates
  • A sample syllabus, preferably in a research-related course
  • Three letters of recommendation (at least one of which focuses on the candidate’s teaching experience and abilities)
  • An unofficial copy of graduate school transcripts

Applicants should submit materials to psychologysearch@hollins.edu. The selected candidate will be asked to submit official transcripts to the Office of the Provost, and once they accept a contingent employment offer, a criminal history background check will be conducted. For questions about the position, please contact search chair, Bonnie Bowers, at bbowers@hollins.edu.
