Help us help others:

The goal of the Crisis Counseling Program is to assist individuals, families, and communities in recovering from the challenging effects of the catastrophic flooding of the Guadalupe River occurring in the early-morning hours of July 4, 2025. The crisis counselor outreach specialist will provide assistance to address the behavioral health needs of disaster survivors through community-based outreach, crisis counseling, public education, and other supportive behavioral health services to survivors. This is a federally funded grant position that is temporary and is expected to be funded for a minimum of 9 months, but may be extended depending on funding and need.

You will get to:

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Individual Crisis Counseling - Support survivors to understand their reactions, improve coping strategies, review their options, and resources.
  • Group Crisis Counseling - Lead group sessions that offer skills to help group members cope with their situations and reactions
  • Public Education - Provide information and education about typical reactions, helpful coping strategies, and available resources
  • Assessment, Referral, and Resource Linkage - Assess needs and referral to additional disaster relief services or mental health or substance use treatment
  • Distribution of Education Materials - Flyers, brochures, tip sheets, education materials, and website information

You'll definitely need:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, sociology, behavioral or human services, or a related degree.
  • Preferred: Experience in disaster behavioral health work.
  • Preferred: Demonstrated familiarity with the local community.
  • Preferred: Bilingual; English/Spanish
  • A valid Texas State Driver's License.
  • Current automobile insurance and the ability to travel to individuals when necessary.

We'll also want you to:

  • Deliver service in the communities rather than wait for survivors to seek assistance
  • Conduct service in non-traditional settings-make contact in shelters, homes, communities, not in clinical or office settings
  • Reach large numbers of people affected by disasters through face-to-face outreach
  • Represents the Crisis Counseling Program in the community and networks with other agencies and partners to ensure the needs of survivors are met
  • Submits documentation and data timely, accurately by utilizing the appropriate process/method
  • Complete FEMA CCP Training
