About Job

Cape Henry Collegiate is seeking applications for a full time Associate Director of College Counseling to begin in 2026. While the ideal candidate would join our team in January, the timeline to start is flexible through July.

The Upper School is searching for a collaborative, flexible, and dedicated person who is committed to supporting each student and family's individual path and goals. This person should enjoy working on a team and be willing to develop relationships throughout our community. A successful candidate will cultivate a student-centered approach that focuses first and foremost on helping students discover who they are and what makes them unique. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of the current college admissions landscape and be familiar with admissions processes at schools across the country and abroad so that students are supported in creating college lists that align with their abilities, talents, personality, educational needs, and financial circumstances.

The Associate Director is a 10-month position. While the majority of responsibilities fall during the academic year, some days in the summer are expected. The three counselors will share a caseload of approximately 90-100 students per grade and are supported by a full-time Administrative Assistant.

Roles & Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of College Counseling, the Associate Director will:

  • Guide students and their families throughout all phases of the college admissions process.
  • Have a comprehensive understanding about colleges' academic programs, admissions, and financial aid processes and engage in continuous learning about these dynamic aspects of higher education.
  • Write detailed letters of recommendation for approximately 35 students per grade.
  • Engage in individual and family college counseling as well as formal presentations to a variety of constituents.
  • Administer and help organize standardized tests.
  • Guide weekly class meetings with upperclassmen and help lead programming for students and families in the Upper School.
  • Be familiar with and use MaiaLearning and College Kickstart to utilize a data-driven approach to the college process.
  • Provide course scheduling support.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with college admissions colleagues. Communicate with them the mission and characteristics of the Cape Henry community.
  • Work closely with a diverse group of coaches, teachers, advisors, parents, and other constituents to form a team of support for Cape Henry students.
  • Serve as a member of the Upper School Leadership Team.
  • Visit colleges and attend professional conferences.
Ideal Candidate Experience and Education

  • Bachelor's degree required, master's preferred.
  • Three to five years of experience in independent school college counseling and/or college admission.
  • Strong advising, writing, public speaking, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Clear commitment to a student-focused, student-led college process.
  • Experience using college counseling software and Google suite.
  • Comfort with technology and using data to inform decision making.
  • Commitment to inclusion in daily practice and relationship building with community members.
  • Engagement with all facets of school life and education within a close-knit community, including school-wide committees and co-curricular activities.
  • Understanding of Cape Henry's mission and embodiment of our four core values of community, integrity, opportunity, and scholarship.
The job description outlines the key responsibilities and fundamental skills required for this role. It is not an all-inclusive list of duties, expectations, or competencies. The supervisor may assign additional tasks and requirements as necessary. This job description is subject to modification.
