Department Summary
The Educator Preparation Program at UNT provides teacher candidates the opportunities to move beyond being students of organized knowledge to becoming teachers who put their acquired knowledge into practice in EC-12 classrooms. The Clinical Practice Office supports this goal through partnerships with district and school teachers and administrators to provide field-based preparation opportunities for both undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students seeking initial teacher.
Position Overview
This position is responsible for providing comprehensive academic advising to students enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate and Alternative Certification programs for teacher certification. This role supports students in understanding program requirements, planning course schedules, and progressing toward certification and graduation. Connects students with available resources for academic success and personal/professional development. This position is responsible for creating and implementing programs related to student success and retention.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate). Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory. Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work independently. Remains active in professional development.
Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications: Masters degree in education and Teacher certification.
Job Duties:
- Advise students on program requirements, certification pathways, and course selection.
- Support students through the certification and graduation process.
- Develops retention and completion initiatives.
- Develop and maintain individualized academic plans in alignment with certification goals.
- Counsels students regarding University requirements and individual program requirements including applicability of transfer credits in a timely and professional manner.
- Verifies accurate application of Texas Administrative Code to all aspects of work, including student eligibility, admission to TSGS and the Teacher Education Program, etc.
- Serve as a liaison between students and academic departments to ensure program compliance.
- Prepares and updates degree, audits, certification plans, and student records using advising technology such as EIS, Salesforce, EAB Navigate, Perceptive Content, etc. to assess student progress.
- Partners effectively with campus resources such as Student Financial Services, Toulouse School of Graduate Studies, etc., to develop an understanding to make appropriate referrals.
- Assists with development or delivery of presentations to oncampus and offcampus groups regarding procedures and program requirements.
