The Barren River District Health Department serves the residents and visitors of Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Logan, Metcalfe, Simpson, and Warren counties of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. BRDHD staff are committed to providing essential public health services in the community. The Barren River District Health Department is accepting applications for a full-time Peer Support Specialist to be based in Warren County, but will serve all 8 counties as needed (Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Logan, Metcalfe, Simpson and Warren).

Responsibilities:

  • This position will use their lived experience with substance use to provide support, advocacy, and mentorship to individuals experiencing substance use disorder.
  • This position will work with clients in the syringe services program to address the social determinants of health.
  • This position will work on the harm reduction team and duties include working the Syringe Services Programs across the district.
  • This position will develop strong relationships with community partners such as treatment recovery centers and social services providers to help address the needs of clients.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • The ideal candidate will possess strong communication and interpersonal skills and exercise appropriate boundaries.
  • Must have lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery.
  • Completion of a certified Peer Support Specialist training program (or willingness to obtain certification within a specified time frame).
  • The minimum requirement is a high school diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience in public health or health related occupation where the skills, knowledge, and other abilities can be demonstrated.
  • Preference will be given to applicants that are bilingual.
  • Applicant must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.

The minimum hourly wage is $15.17. After a successful 6-month probationary period, the employee would receive a 5% increase. Annually, employees receive a board-approved raise.
