Experience: Ten (10) years of machining experience, and at least five (5) years’ in a supervisory or management role.

Job Description

The Machine Shop Manager is responsible for the administration and performance of CCS’ Machine Shop operations, ensuring high-quality production of precision components that meet stringent aerospace standards. This role is responsible for managing a 30-40 employee 2 shift team of CNC machinists, programmers, drilling and deburring operators, while optimizing processes, ensuring safety compliance, and meeting delivery schedules and costs. The manager will establish and implement departmental performance objectives and plans in accordance with CCS’ short-term and long term Business Plans. Department plans will include driving continuous improvement of department operations and processes efficiencies, lead lean manufacturing, Six Sigma and CNC automation projects, ensuring adherence to quality standards and customer specifications. Other duties include: administration of company policies; and employee training and career development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Production Oversight: Manage daily machine shop operations and personnel, either directly or through subordinates, to meet daily, weekly and monthly quality and production goals. 
  • Team Leadership: Develop and accomplish department goals and plans for Safety, Quality, Delivery, Productivity, Cost and Inventory that meet or exceed company’s goals and objectives.
  • Team Training & Development: Supervise, train, develop and mentor team of 30-40 CNC machinists, programmers, and technicians, fostering a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Process Optimization: Implement and refine manufacturing processes using lean principles and Six Sigma methodologies to improve throughput, reduce waste and enhance product quality.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure all parts meet customer and CCS quality standards by thorough operator First Article and In-Process Inspection on each job.  
  • Scheduling: Responsible for maintaining and executing production schedules and quality standards for each machine shop work center.
  • Resource Planning: Develop and maintain personnel requirements for department based on current and projected production needs.
  • Document & Program Control: Responsible for overseeing the origination and maintenance of machine shop Quality System Procedures (QSPs), Work Instructions, Part Travelers, CNC set-up documents; and Mastercam, Part Maker and other CNC and CMM programs.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify and conduct continuous improvement Kaizen events/projects, SPC implementation, technology upgrades and workforce training to reduce set-up times, job cycle times, CNC machine utilization and employee productivity by reducing cost and waste from Machine Shop processes.
  • Automation: Identify, develop and implement CNC machine monitoring, automation and lights-out machining projects to achieve quality and cost reduction objectives.
  • Cost Control: Establish and manage departmental budgets, monitor expenses and implement cost saving initiatives without compromising quality or safety. 
  • Safety & Compliance: Enforce OSHA and company safety standards and policies, conduct regular safety audits, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with engineering, quality, planning and cost accounting teams to resolve technical issues timely, improve designs for manufacturability, document changes, new product design activities, material availability and cost savings.
  • Reporting & Metrics: Track and report key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, past due jobs, scrap rates, labor efficiency and productivity to senior management.
  • Employee supervisory responsibilities: In accordance with Company policies and applicable laws, perform interviewing, hiring, training, assigning work, appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Equipment, tooling and Software Maintenance:   Maintain and upgrade, as necessary, through support personnel, all tooling, machinery, computers, and software used by department. 
  • Plan, administer and maintain procedures and work instructions for primary activities within department in accordance with company’s ISO 9001/AS9100 Quality Management System; 
  • Ability to react to changes productively and perform other essential tasks as assigned;
  • Conduct himself/herself in a professional and courteous manner.


Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be ITAR compliant (U.S. Citizen or permanent U.S. resident) for Aerospace and Defense work.
  • Ten (10) years of machining experience, and at least five (5) years’ in a supervisory or management role.
  • Proven experience in aerospace manufacturing, with knowledge of AS9100D Quality System requirements.
  • Hands on experience with CNC programming, setup, operation and inspection on 3-5 axis lathes and mills; punch presses, drill presses, EDM, grinders and deburring equipment.

 

Skills and Requirements:

  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop team.
  • Deep understanding of tight tolerance machining processes, tooling and aerospace materials (stainless steel, aluminum, brass, etc).
  • Ability to read and interpret complex part drawings, perform standard shop computations relating to part dimensions, tooling, speeds and feeds, and recommend optimum machining methods. 
  • Proficient knowledge of precision mechanical inspection processes and equipment, including calipers, micrometers, height gages, thread and plug gages, optical comparators, bore scopes and CMM’s.
  • Proficient knowledge of standard shop practices and aerospace quality standards, including GD&T drawing tolerances, First Articles, part finishes and burrs.
  • Working knowledge of Mastercam, Solid Works or equivalent programming and design software.
  • Expertise in Lean Manufacturing, SPC, or Six Sigma process improvement practices.
  • Certification in Lean Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, ASQ or similar credentials are a plus.
  • Ability to set and achieve goals, motivate and direct subordinates.
  • Effective time management skills;
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency with ERP shop management software (e.g., Syteline, Epicor, SAP); and M/S Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and other office software.
  • Working consistently and working overtime occasionally to meet production objectives.
  • Conduct himself/herself in a professional manner.
