Title: COUNSELOR

Reports To: Department Chair

Duration: 10 Months

Salary: Salary schedule is based upon the education and experience of each counselor. One year of salary schedule credit for each year of full-time experience up to a maximum of five years.

Definition

The guidance counselor is responsible for the organization and operation of guidance activities in accordance with department, school and district goals, objectives, policies and procedures. The guidance counselor's principal task is to develop and implement developmental and preventative programs and services which assist students to enhance and improve their academic, personal-social and career exploration and planning knowledge and skills. The counselor is accountable to his department head and principal or designee.

The pupil personnel services program seeks to assist all students to become effective learners, to gain and maintain confidence in their capacities, and to make choices and decisions crucial to their own as well as society's well-being. The guidance counselor as a counseling specialist, prepares and organizes counseling activities, emphasizing quality instruction as the most important function of the school. Cooperating with fellow teachers, counselors and his/her department head, the counselor will facilitate student achievement of established PPS goals through a variety of appropriate counseling techniques.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates with other staff members in determining and achieving school programs, goals and objectives.
  • Follow department goals and objectives as the basis of guidance activities.
  • Assist in developing faculty inservice programs related to student counseling needs.
  • Assist students in educational planning, advising and course placement.
  • Assist students and parents in developing student academic programs consistent with the students' aptitudes and abilities and in keeping with their short and long range career goals.
  • Verify assigned students completion of all graduation requirements and notification to students and parents of same.
  • Provide consultation for teachers and/or department heads in the recommendation of students' placement in courses.
  • Provide individual and group counseling with students.
  • Monitor the academic, career and personal-social progress and development of all students in assigned caseload.
  • Refer students in assigned caseload with special needs to appropriate referral resource.
  • Provide parents with consultation as needed.
  • Refer parents of students with special needs to appropriate referral resource.
  • Act as resource for teachers concerning their students.
  • Provide consultation with administrators, teachers and personnel services staff.
  • Provide individual and/or group consultations for the purpose of assisting teachers to better relate and motivate students in the classroom.
  • Provide resource help for teachers on guidance related topics.
  • Provide information to students, parents and teachers regarding the services provided by the guidance department.
  • Consult with administration or designee regarding exceptions to school policy.
  • Participate in student and program evaluation process. Assist with the administration of the school's testing program.
  • Provide students and parents an interpretation of information contained in the students' permanent and temporary records upon request.
  • Provide the administration with information regarding student development, addressing areas which need to be changed in order to continue positive growth.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; planning and maintaining projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; and stages of child development.

ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific Ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with frequent interruptions.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision; using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others;. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 20% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a clean atmosphere.
