Position Summary:

Support the delivery of safe, engaging, and enriching programming for children in a before and after-school or seasonal camp setting. Help guide youth through structured play, learning activities, and value-based instruction in line with state regulations and the YMCA's core principles of honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, and faith.

Key ResponsibilitiesJob Overview:
Contribute to a safe and vibrant experience for children participating in before/after-school and seasonal camp programs. Provide support through structured recreational, academic, and character-building activities that align with childcare standards and the YMCA’s core values of honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, and faith.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Activity Support:
Help facilitate daily activities that are engaging, age-appropriate, and rooted in the YMCA’s mission. Encourage creativity, physical play, and learning in a positive and inclusive environment.

Program Site Operations:
Work alongside your team to ensure the environment remains safe, clean, and well-organized, in accordance with internal policies and childcare licensing requirements.

Youth Supervision:
Assist the Site Supervisor in overseeing children throughout the day, modeling appropriate behavior, and encouraging respect and cooperation. Promote a nurturing environment built on trust and positivity.

Family & Team Interaction:
Develop strong, professional relationships with children, caregivers, staff, and school partners. Participate in regular team meetings and professional growth opportunities.

Safety & Behavior Monitoring:
Follow all safety procedures including pick-up verification, injury and incident documentation, and high-traffic area supervision. Promote a safe, respectful space for all participants.

Position Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of hands-on experience with children in educational, camp, church, or similar settings.
  • Current or willing to obtain certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED, and child protection.
  • Able to lead small and large group activities and interact effectively with youth from various backgrounds.
  • Must comply with all health requirements (e.g., TB clearance, immunizations).
  • Background check, fingerprinting, and drug screening required.

Preferred Experience

  • Passion for working with children and youth.
  • Experience in babysitting, tutoring, mentoring, or child enrichment programs.
  • Previous experience serving culturally and economically diverse communities.

Scheduling Details

  • Afterschool Care: Part-time hours during school sessions, typically 2:30 PM – 6:30 PM.
  • Camp Programs: Seasonal full-day shifts available during school holidays and summer (multiple shift options available).
  • Attendance required at staff trainings, family engagement events, and team meetings (with advance notice).

Additional Considerations

  • Some travel between nearby program sites may be required.
  • Job involves moderate noise levels and regular physical activity (must be able to lift up to 50 lbs).

Program Engagement:

Work closely under the direction of the Site Lead to monitor children and uphold a nurturing, respectful tone. Serve as a positive role model and promote the YMCA’s core values through your actions.

Relationships & Communication:
Build strong, supportive connections with children, families, coworkers, and school staff. Participate in scheduled team meetings and ongoing professional development sessions.

Child Safety & Conduct:
Consistently follow safety protocols including authorized pick-up procedures and incident reporting. Proactively monitor high-traffic areas and report any concerning behavior, ensuring a safe, protective atmosphere for every child.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • A minimum of 6 months experience working with youth in schools, childcare centers, faith-based settings, or similar environments.
  • Certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Child Abuse Prevention (or willingness to obtain).
  • Ability to lead activities and interact positively with children of various ages and backgrounds.
  • Must meet local/state health requirements (e.g., TB testing, immunizations).
  • Must successfully pass background and fingerprint screenings, as well as a drug test.

Preferred Background

  • Demonstrated passion for youth development.
  • Babysitting, tutoring, or related childcare experience is a plus.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.

Work Schedule

After School:
Part-time weekday shifts (generally 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm) aligned with the academic calendar.

Camps:
Seasonal full-day shifts available during school breaks (morning, mid-day, and evening options).

Attendance is required for team meetings, training sessions, and family events, with prior notice provided.

Additional Information

  • Travel may occasionally be required between multiple program locations.
  • Noise level is moderate, and physical activity is part of the daily routine (may involve lifting up to 50 lbs).
