Job Description

The Academic and Career Counselor is responsible for guiding participants in developing academic and career plans. The Academic and Career Counselor develops and implements a broad curriculum for college, post-secondary, technical and career growth. The position supports program participants in identifying and moving towards academic and career goals. Counselor support participants in building necessary skills of communication, collaboration, and critical thinking,


Responsibilities:

  • Development of career and academic counseling program
  • Writing benchmarks, program goals and policies for academic and career counseling
  • Development of relationships with colleges, internship programs and employers
  • One-on-one individual counseling sessions with program participants
  • Establishing rapport between the Counselor and individual.
  • Develop and create career and aspirational SMART goals
  • Create a safe space for individuals to explore potential career options while developing an understanding of the job market and opportunities, without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Help individuals identify their strengths and sense of purpose and how it relates to their career and academic goals
  • Liaise with Arete staff on progress of participants

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a relevant field required.
  • Prior experience working in human services, academic counseling, coaching or similar experience
  • Must be able to pass VT’s background check
  • Interest in working with young adults
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills
  • Independent, flexible and team oriented
  • Personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with co-workers

Compensation:

  • Commensurate with experience
