Position Objective

Supports District schools and principals in their effort to foster an optimal educational environment for students. The Social Worker/ Student Assistance Program (SAP) Coordinator provides a comprehensive, developmental,

prevention and intervention program for high school students. The prevention counselor works with students, parents and school staff to improve conditions on campus through the use of data and research-based practices.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

  • Assists with the implementation of staff training, parent education, diversion program and community programming.
  • Assists with Leadership Team.
  • SAP – Student Assistance Program Coordinator.
  • Provides responsive services to students and families that may include assessment, individual short term or crisis intervention, at risk student small groups, home visitations, case management and advocacy.
  • Interacts and communicates with school personnel, parents and the community to support student achievement and program success.
  • Networks with community agencies to provide ATOD and mental health intervention referrals for at-risk students.
  • Refers students, in consultation with their parents, to appropriate community resources.
  • Uses district and counseling data to plan, implement and evaluate the prevention program.
  • Uses appropriate and effective strategies and skills in teaching and facilitating prevention curriculum lessons in classrooms, small groups and with individual students.
  • Adheres to legal, ethical, and professional standards.
  • Coordinates, conducts or participates in other activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school and district.
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: (positions in this class typically require):

  • Master’s degree in social work.
  • Certified Substance Abuse Counseling preferred.
  • Teaching experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE: (position requirements at entry):

Knowledge Of

  • Working with high school students;
  • Working with community programs;
  • Working in youth prevention and intervention;
  • Support group facilitator or leader;
  • Organization with good systems for record keeping and record retrieval;

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Light Work: Exerting up to 10pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
