SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELOR


FLSA: Full-Time Exempt


Summary: Candidates should have a Master’s degree and a current and valid state guidance counselor certificate from the Florida Department of Education or a current and valid Florida state license as Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) or Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).


Primary Function: Under the direction of the School Principal, responsible for providing individual and group counseling to students.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  1. Recognize and support the Catholic Mission of the school, aligning actions and teachings with the Catholic Church.

  2. Demonstrate lived Gospel values by participating in faith community activities and modeling the teachings of Jesus.

  3. Contribute to building the school’s faith community through participation in religious and service activities.

  4. Adhere to Catholic Doctrine and principles of morality as a role model.

  5. Develop creative intervention methods to adapt to various situations and coordinate student interventions.

  6. Serve as a resource for teachers and parents on counseling needs, fostering confidence in the school.

  7. Work compassionately with students, parents, and staff.

  8. Assist in planning and implementing behavior management strategies.

  9. Act as a liaison with outside resources, ensuring consistency in response procedures.

  10. Guide teachers in classroom management and student behavior strategies, including referrals and follow-up.

  11. Utilize effective counseling techniques, documentation, and student tracking.

  12. Provide staff with information about the counseling program.

  13. Help interpret student data for teachers and parents/guardians.

  14. Supervise student activities as appropriate.

  15. Perform additional duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications:



  1. Strong commitment to the mission of fostering lay leadership in the Catholic Church; practicing Roman Catholic if baptized.

  2. Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal, and presentation skills.

  3. Strong interpersonal skills; self-starter, organized, team player.

  4. Availability for evening and weekend work; reliable transportation.

  5. Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.

  6. Proficiency in computer technology, including MS Word and Excel; confidentiality maintained.

  7. Flexibility to assess needs and adapt strategies in a ministerial environment.

  8. Ability to pass criminal background checks.

  9. Professional appearance and demeanor.


Physical/Mental Requirements: Coordination, manual dexterity, normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required.


Required Activities: Walking, sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, talking, handling, hearing, carrying.
