Position Description

Position Title: Scholar Support Counselor
Reports To: Academic Director/Manager Supervises: N/A
Classification: Part Time, Non-Exempt Salary Range: $16 -$18/hour

Hours of Work:

MUST be available every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 PM to 6:30 PM and every other Saturday. Days of availability are non-negotiable.

General Description

Scholar Support Counselor (SSC) are on-site instructors for Boys Hope Girls Hope (BHGH) academic curriculum. They instruct a small group (30) of BHGH Scholars by implementing BHGH’s core programming up to and including College Preparatory Workshops (completing college applications, scholarship research, financial aid, etc.), Academic Skill Building (notetaking, test-taking strategies, citations), Personal Development (financial management, self-esteem, networking, etc.) and Academic Development (“pre-view” curriculum, public speaking, essay writing, etc.

For Scholars needing additional assistance. Scholar Support Counselor provide specialized, one-on-one supplemental academic support and serve as the primary point of contact and liaison between Scholars, school staff, community organizations, and BHGH administration.

They are responsible for ensuring that all BHGH Scholars meet their necessary course requirements, including course material, G.P.A improvement, college prep, and academic/life success.

Major Areas of Responsibility

1. BHGH Academy Development and Administration

· Instruct and implement BHGH’s programmatic curriculum for 10-20 BHGH Scholars in a closed, high school environment.

· Directly collaborate with BHGH’s Academic Manager to implement the program curriculum, including designing activities that promote personal development, career exposure, and increased life skills.

· Provide academic support and development for BHGH Scholars through consistent monitoring of academic progress, frequent teacher communication, and academic coaching.

· Identify Scholar’s areas of course weakness and strengths; report areas of need to the Academic Manager/Director that may impede the scholar’s academic success.

· Provide on-site support for high school faculty, parents, and collaborating organizations.

· Arrange the classroom for the best instruction delivery.

· Accompany Scholars on BHGH field trips (college tours, community service projects, etc.)

· Work with Scholars to set individualized goals every six months. Track academic, personal, and skill development through the use of assessment tools, database tracking, and observations.

· Communicate with the Scholar’s families via emails, letters, and bi-monthly parent meetings.

· Distribute and collect all program curriculum materials from scholars per advisement on the date and time requested.

· Represent and market the BHGH brand by recruiting additional Scholars for the current or future school years.

· Network with community organizations and community members to teach specific workshops.

Critical Criteria

A bachelor’s degree in education, or a related human services field, with at least two years of supervisory experience in a school or educational setting, is preferred, but not required. Applicant must be at least 21 years of age.

The position requires the following competencies for success:

· Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with adolescents, their guardians or parents, teachers, and other audiences verbally and in writing.

· Computer proficiency with ability to use word processing, e-mail, and internet applications.

· Ability to manage several projects and activities at the same time.

· Ability to problem solve via critical thinking skills.

· Sensitivity to different religious backgrounds, and cultures.

· Ability to set, measure, and implement programmatic goals.

· Ability to provide training, constructive feedback, and supervision of volunteers.

Working Conditions

The position is entry-level, based primarily in the office and partner schools of BHGH. Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings or trainings. The employee will work a set schedule of PT hours, estimated at 25 -30 hours a week. During peak program activities, longer hours may be required.

The position requires annual participation in continuing education, satisfied through in-house programs offered by Boys Hope Girls Hope. The position will have an annual performance evaluation.

The position may require the supervision of volunteers or tutors, regular written and verbal communication, and administrative duties. If needed, this position requires the ability to travel to area schools and events. This position makes extensive use of phones and computers to complete work. Incumbents must be able to provide supervision to adolescents in a school, classroom, and community setting.
