General Summary
The Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology department at Western Michigan University seeks applications for Assistant/Associate Professor in Counseling Psychology. The position will begin in the fall semester of 2026 and is a full-time, nine-month, tenure accruing position with the possibility of summer teaching at additional compensation. Review of applicants will begin on September 1, 2025 and continue until the position is filled.
Major Duties
Successful applicants will:
- Have a strong background in, as well as demonstrated potential for, excellence contributing to program’s mission of preparing multiculturally competent psychologists who are prepared to work with racially diverse clients.
- Have an established publication record and/or research agenda that advances the program’s emphasis on race and other issues of diversity.
- Have opportunity to participate in leadership opportunities including the role of Training Director, if desired, and if applying at the associate level.
- Teach graduate courses in our APA accredited Counseling Psychology doctoral program, as well as core master’s level classes in counseling psychology.
- Serve in this appointment for Fall/Spring semesters with the possibility for summer teaching assignments for additional compensation.
- Teach at the Kalamazoo’s main campus and possibly at the Grand Rapids campus.
- Chair and serve on doctoral dissertation committees.
- Advise master’s students in Counseling Psychology program.
- Contribute to the Counseling Psychology Training Committee and participate in departmental, college, and university committee work and professional service.
- Provide clinical supervision for practicum and internship students.
Minimum Qualifications
Successful applicants will have:
- An earned doctorate in counseling psychology from an accredited institution, or “All But Dissertation Status” (ABD) with degree completion before contract start date, with preference for graduates of APA accredited Counseling Psychology doctoral programs.
- A strong research agenda and/or publication record that advances the program’s emphasis on race and other issues of diversity.
- The ability to teach core counseling psychology doctoral courses as well as foundational master’s courses in counseling psychology while infusing race and other issues of diversity.
- Readiness for advising and serving on doctoral dissertation committees
- Readiness to provide clinical supervision
- The willingness to contribute to the Counseling Psychology Training Committee and participate in departmental, college, and university committee work and professional service.
- Demonstrated strong identity as a counseling psychologist as evidenced by active participation in counseling psychology professional organizations, and knowledge of and commitment to APA accreditation standards and processes.
- Experience with technology and/or online teaching in educational settings.
Desired Qualifications
Successful applicants will have:
- Eligibility for licensure as a doctoral level psychologist in Michigan.
- Interest or experience securing external grants.
- Interest or experience using advanced instructional technologies to improve the teaching/learning process.
- Experience teaching or a desire to teach Intellectual and Personality Assessment, Vocational Psychology, or Social Psychology courses.
- Experience teaching or a desire to teach in one of the following core content areas: Multicultural Counseling, Advanced Multicultural Counseling, Learning and Cognition, Statistics, Research Design.
