Social Worker – Behavioral Health – CPEP Peer Bridger Program – Grants Funded

You will participate in comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, provide psychosocial assessments, as well as crisis intervention and coordinate discharge planning. You may also work with patients for short term counseling

Social Workers in a collaborative team setting, social workers meet with patients daily together with the attending MD and nursing staff. The clinical teams also meet daily in the morning for nursing report, and for post-rounds following patient rounds. Social workers are responsible for family contact (including facilitation of family meetings), collaboration with outpatient providers and discharge planning in addition to performing psychosocial and psychiatric assessments, treatment planning and short-term therapeutic interventions

The shift is Monday - Friday day (8am - 5pm) and is located at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital / Weill Cornell Medical Center.


Preferred Criteria

  • Prior experience in the treatment of psychiatric/behavioral health patients

  • Knowledge of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

Required Criteria

  • Master’s degree in social work (MSW)

  • Licensed Masters Social Worker (LMSW) by the State of New York within 1 year of hire

  • Limited Permit (must supply exam date prior to start of employment)

  • Fieldwork or previous experience in a psychiatric setting

  • Demonstrated integrity and adherence to social work ethics and professional standards

  • Capacity to form a therapeutic relationship with a variety of patients and to maintain a neutral therapeutic stance

  • Knowledge base of bio-psychosocial model, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV (DSM-IV) diagnoses, criteria for treatment of different diagnoses in an acute care setting, behavioral risk factors and of the impact of mental illness upon individual and family functioning

  • Competency in individual, family and group treatment modalities and treatment techniques appropriate to an inpatient treatment setting

  • Ability to conduct initial evaluations and psychosocial assessments and to establish individualized and measurable treatment goals

  • Knowledge base of community and discharge planning resources and processes

  • Effective organizational skills to manage clinical, discharge planning and documentation requirements within assigned LOS of inpatient hospitalization

  • Ability to communicate effectively and to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team

  • Demonstrated self-awareness to identify learning needs and capacity to apply supervisory feedback into practice
