About Job

Essential Duties
  • Administrative oversight of department planning, budgeting, and assessments. Develops and disseminates reports for the division and university. Coordinate operational duties, budget management, monitoring and maintaining inventory, room reservations, purchasing, vendor contract processing, travel arrangements, monthly credit card statement reconciliations, reports, etc. with appropriate personnel. Also, oversees management and negotiation of contracts with external entities and programs.
  • Provides direct oversight and strategic direction for mental health services that address the needs of college students, including the development of counseling events/programs, crisis response protocols, and student-centered wellness initiatives. This includes but is not limited to coordinating proactive mental health programming, wellness promotion, and activities.
  • Collects and organizes data to continually assess and improve the quality of programming, services, and client progress. Uses the data to make informed decisions and recommendations about retention goals, support services, and student success.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, development, supervision, and evaluation of professional staff members and any graduate interns. Directs and oversees business process documentation including training documents, policy manuals, establishing and implementing new procedures as needed.
  • Effectively manage and supervise the Counseling Center staff, clinical operations (e.g., staff caseload, outreach/consultation programs, referral processes and procedures, clinical records, etc.), and daily operations.
  • Ensures counseling staff maintain appropriate licensure and adhere to clinical, ethical, and legal standards through regular supervision, training, and compliance monitoring.
  • Develop, facilitate, and implement workshops, presentations, trainings, and intentional conversations for students, faculty, and staff for the campus community at large and local stakeholders.
  • Responsible for coordinating and serving in the Counselor-on-call rotation, counseling center’s emergency and crisis response procedures.
  • Foster strong relationships with university partners, local community partners, alumni, and other stakeholders to support and enhance connections and opportunities for students and departmental initiatives.
  • Advocates for the mental health needs of students across campus by collaborating with university leadership, participating in policy development, and promoting mental health awareness initiatives. Takes a leadership role in representing the center to other campus units.
  • Support the demand for counseling services by maintaining a full caseload of students and providing individual or group counseling for students experiencing developmental difficulties, mental health concerns, relational issues, educational/academic challenges, psychological challenges, and/or behavioral problems. Services include assessment, evaluation, treatment planning, as well as crisis intervention.
  • Serve on Student Affairs and University-wide committees. This includes but is not limited to serving on the Behavior Intervention Team.
  • Support the Office of Student Affairs in the creation, promotion, and execution of retention efforts and collaborative programming targeting evenings, weekends, and key University-wide events including but not limited to annual large-scale signature programming events and develop and implement in fundraising strategies to support the goals and initiatives of the department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Dean of Students or Vice President for Student Affairs.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
  • Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or related field required
  • 5 years or more of full-time counseling experience required
  • Must be licensed in the state of Mississippi, or eligible to obtain LPC or LMFT in Mississippi within one year of beginning employment
  • Must be board certified supervisor, or supervisor eligible within one year of beginning employment

Job Description Summary
The Director provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight for the university’s Counseling Center, ensuring the delivery of high-quality mental health services to students. This role is responsible for supervising clinical staff, managing daily operations, and developing programs that support student mental health and well-being. The Director collaborates with campus partners to promote a holistic approach to student success and ensure services are welcoming, accessible, and aligned with current best practices. Additionally, the position plays a key role in crisis intervention, staff development, and policy implementation. The Director serves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team and reports directly to the Dean of Students.
Hours of Availability
Full-time position. Must be available and willing to work nights and weekends as needed. Serve in on-call rotation for counseling center staff.
