Job Description

Title: Peer Support Specialist

Position Summary:

This position is instrumental in supporting clients to maintain their sobriety, establish healthy relationships, social supports, and build workable skills.

Position Type:

Classification –Full-time/Part-time hourly position.

FLSA Classification – Non-Exempt

Paygrade level – Entry Level

Duties / Responsibilities:

· Facilitate substance/recovery support groups for clients in substance recovery

· Accompany clients to substance meetings, and participation in meetings of community groups in relation to sobriety efforts in advocating for client needs

· Observing behavior and evidence of general well-being and discusses observations with the clients, case managers, and senior support staff as needed

· Attend and participate in staff meetings and training sessions

· Collaborate with a resident to explore and identify barriers to accessing community resources or treatment providers

· Model and mentor recovery values, attitudes, beliefs and personal actions to encourage wellness and resilience for residents served and to promote recovery

· Recognize and appropriately respond to conditions that constitute an emergency to include both physical and behavioral health crises utilizing the emergency response procedure of ABCCM

· Provide support to the residents in navigating systems (medical, social services, or legal) environment in the community, residence, and workplace

· Promote a resident’s opportunity for personal growth by identifying teachable moments for building relationship skills to empower the residents and enhance personal responsibility

· Perform other duties as required

Skills / Competencies:

· Strong written and verbal skills

· Must possess computer skills, basic data entry, Excel and Office

· Ability to follow specific guidelines and strategies necessary to achieve goals

· Must be able to work with various faith groups, volunteers, clients, and staff.

· Communicate in a professional and courteous manner to donors, volunteers and other staff members

Qualifications:

· High School Diploma or GED or Equivalent

· Certified as a Peer Support Specialist through the NC Peer Support Specialist Program

· Valid drivers’ license

· CPR and First Aid Certified

Relationships / Working Environment:

· The Peer Support Specialist reports to the Costello House Director/Assistant Director

· The position interacts with Costello staff, community providers, and volunteers

· Physical Demands: Must be ambulatory; must have visual/hearing acuity. Must possess dexterity, stand, sit, walk, lift and carry twenty pounds for short distances

· Mental Demands: Must have verbal ability; must be able to comprehend instructions

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $18.00 per hour
