Society Insurance is seeking an experienced a Commercial Underwriter III to join our team. This position will develop and maintain a profitable book of business consisting of primarily small-middle market business accounts by acquiring, evaluating, and analyzing information relative to risks to make selection and pricing decisions. This book will include underwriting mainly for bars and restaurants.
About the Role
- Determines acceptable accounts by evaluating renewal and new business accounts for acceptability based on profit potential, assigned underwriting authority, and company guidelines.
- Will have sole responsibility for agencies as assigned by Underwriting management according to territory needs, including transaction handling that encompasses the full policy lifecycle.
- Prices business by applying expertise and judgment in conjunction with company guidelines, assigned underwriting authority, and underwriting decisions.
- Attracts business through building and managing positive professional relationships with agents and Regional Sales Managers; determines appropriate communication methods to assist in building positive relationships including travel to agents’ offices.
- Builds and executes an annual agency management production and profit plan for the assigned territory, supported by cultivating relationships through phone contact, written correspondence, and on-site visits with agents and insureds.
- Acts as a liaison helping customers solve problems with departments such as claims, billing, auditing, etc.
- Reviews and analyzes Risk Control surveys and communicates opportunities for improvement in order to maximize profitability and assist policyholders in managing their individual risks and exposures.
- Offers departmental support by mentoring, coaching, and developing the Underwriting staff.

What it Will Take
- Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, or related field and 5 years of commercial underwriting experience – OR – 7 years of experience successfully underwriting insurance programs that are similar to Society’s core products.
- Basic competency with desktop applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Demonstrated proficiency in utilization of underwriting best practices, systems, and tools.
- Continuing education in the insurance field (example: CPCU, CIC, ARM, AU).
