POSITION SUMMARY

The Lactation Counselor is fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Delight,

and Stewardship by assisting the breastfeeding mother in attaining her individual goals

through a collaborative practice model and serving as an educator, counselor, patient

advocate and researcher.


PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Provides clinical support and education to the inpatient breastfeeding mothers as

evidenced by documentation of assessments, interventions, and patient teaching.

2. Provides outpatient clinical management and support to breastfeeding mothers to

include the rental and/or sale of necessary lactation equipment and supplies.

3. Demonstrates effective and safe clinical practice as evidenced by Skills Fair

demonstration, completion of yearly competency assessment and Age Specific

Checklist.

4. Demonstrates effective communication with other members of the Healthcare team

and promotes effective team functioning.

5. Demonstrates dependability, reliability and flexibility.

6. Provides at least one staff education program annually, two community education

programs, and acts as a preceptor to new associates.

7. Documents to the plan of care as needed for continuum of care.

8. Provides services to patients and families with sensitivity and respect for their needs,

expectations, age, cultural and individual differences.

9. Educates patients and family and documents education.

10.Contributes to the patient experience as evidenced by positive patient satisfaction

scores and HCAHPs scores for department/medical center and/or written compliments

by patients/others as well as consistent performance of purposeful hourly rounding

and bedside shift report.


Work Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Work Experience At least one (1) year experience in a licensed or certified clinical

role

  • Certification:

o Must hold current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Healthcare

Provider Completion Card upon hire and maintain

o NRP within 90 days

o Must have one (1) of the following:

  • CLC (Certified Lactation Consultant) or,
  • IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) or,
  • CLE (Certified Lactation Educator) or,
  • LE or LEC (Lactation Educator Counselor) or,
  • CBC (Certified Breastfeeding Counselor) or,
  • CBE (Certified Breastfeeding Educator)
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

o Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

o Must be able to respond appropriately to life threatening situations.

o Must be able to assess, interpret data and educate patients and families of various

ages and levels of understanding


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS - Moderate

  • Physically agile; may require walking, standing running, bending, stooping, kneeling,

climbing or crouching frequently

  • Medium work that may include lifting or moving objects up to 50 pounds of force

occasionally, with or without assistance

  • May require moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various

environments including tight and confined spaces, including reaching out and above

shoulders or over head

  • May lift, turn, pull, push, or ambulate people and/or equipment with or without

assistance up to 90% of the assigned shift

  • May be exposed to inside and outside environments with varied temperatures, air

quality, lighting and/or low to loud noise

  • May require working with biohazards such as blood/body fluids and airborne particles

following OSHA and CDC Guidelines.

  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination to perform tasks
  • Workspace may vary from open to confined; on site or remote
  • May require travel to various facilities within and beyond county perimeter; may require

use of personal vehicle
