JOB DESCRIPTION
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
New York State School Counselor Certification
REPORTS TO:
Elementary School Principal or Superintendent of Schools
JOB GOAL:
To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as they mature to become responsible, caring and compassionate adults.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assesses student abilities, interests and achievement to make decisions about their future;
Implement an effective program of educational and career planning;
Works to discover and develop special abilities of students;
Works to resolve students’ educational handicaps;
Consults and shares strategies supporting student achievement with parents, teachers, other educators and community organizations;
Collaborates with other educators, parents and the community to support student achievement, attendance and discipline data;
Refers students and families for additional assistance and information to school or community resources;
Registers students new to the school and orients them to school procedures and the school’s varied opportunities for learning;
Works to prevent students missing school and attendance concerns;
Remains readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding and maturity.
Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment.
Plans assemblies and guest speakers on careers and career paths as appropriate by grade levels;
Works collaboratively with the elementary principal to implement a robust Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS);
Guides students in their participation in school and community activities;
Assists with enrollment and pre K enrollment and Kindergarten roundup;
Attends and assists when necessary with school events such as student recognition ceremonies, Open House, Parent/Teacher Conferences, and PreK and Kindergarten graduation;
Maintains student records and projects their confidentiality.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Employee under Elementary School BEDS Code.
Position is under the Brocton Teachers’ Association Collective Bargaining Agreement
Four (4) year probation
EVALUATION:
The Elementary School Guidance Counselor will be evaluated following the process and procedures as outlined in the Brocton Teachers’ Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.
